Ellie and Joel might be making their way to Fortnite.
Based on some leaks, it looks like The Last of Us might be doing a crossover with Fortnite. As we all know, Epic Games and Fortnite are no strangers to crossovers. A lot of the skins and cosmetics are from so many different types of media. Fortnite has heroes from both Marvel and DC Comics. Plenty of characters from other gaming franchises are also in Fortnite. This game is one giant smorgasbord of pop culture characters to add to your Fortnite account.
Sony has shown that they are willing to work with Epic Games to add their characters and respective IPs to Fortnite. Both Kratos and Aloy are currently in Fortnite. Considering Sony is somewhat hard to collaborate with at times, this is a huge deal. If Ellie and Joel would join Fortnite, it would show that Sony is willing to work with more developers who can be considered competition.
The thing is though, while everyone thought this leak was looking likely because multiple leakers reported on it. It seems that Naughty Dog’s Neil Druckman has some things to say about it.

Naughty Dog Says It’s Not Happening?
Recently Neil Druckman, the Creative Director of The Last of Us series, made a tweet that shuts down the leak. Neil Druckman states, “Love me some Fortnite… but there are no plans for this. False rumor.” It seems pretty clear that this rumor is completely false. Or is it!?
I mean there is a very small chance that Sony approved this without notifying Naughty Dog. However, that situation is 99.9% unlikely. Also, everyone knows that people will straight up lie about something to not spoil it, so it is even more exciting when it does come. For example, the Spider-Man: No Way Home cast was denying a lot of stuff about the movie that turned out to be true.
The gaming industry is very quiet when they want to release something big. They want the hype of the announcement to be a crucial moment. So sometimes they will lie about it, even if it is true. Of course, some developers are just trolls and love to see their playerbase squirm. Neil Druckman might be telling the 100% truth here, but players will always have their doubts.
What TLOU Characters Would Join Fortnite?
If the leaks were true, how many characters would join the large Fortnite roster? We can assume that at least two characters will be available to earn for your Fortnite account. Joel and Ellie are a shoo-in, maybe Abby would be the third pick. Who knows? The Last of Us series has a lot of characters that help make the world and story as special as it is, but Joel and Ellie are the most iconic and memorable.
The Last of Us TV Show Tie-In?
Lastly, while the Fortnite and The Last of Us Crossover might not happen at this time, it might happen when the TV show comes out. As of right now, we know it is set to release sometime in early 2023. I think that would be the perfect time to do the crossover event. Developers have to plan out these things way ahead of time. To create the skins, test them, and plan other releases.
Maybe they have already begun working on The Last of Us event for Fortnite, but it isn’t close to being finished. If the show is released before the end of March, there is still plenty of time to have everything finished. Maybe the leakers saw partial files that hinted toward this crossover, but they aren’t finished. Either way, it may or may not happen, but releasing it with the TV show would be the best possible move.

In short, while the Fortnite and The Last of Us crossover was shut down, it doesn’t mean it still won’t happen. There have been plenty of instances where a person said a certain thing wasn’t happening, only for it to still happen shortly after. With The Last of Us TV show in the works, it only makes sense to do a crossover to build hype. If the crossover would happen, you can expect Joel and Ellie either in the battle pass or Fortnite Item Shop. While I believe it is still going to happen, for now, we only have the word of Neil Druckman to take.
