Huawei Mate XT2 Rumored to Introduce U-Shaped Triple-Fold Design with Improved Durability and Reduced Creases

Huawei is expected to expand its foldable smartphone portfolio once again with the launch of the Mate XT2, the successor to its pioneering triple-fold device. According to the latest industry leaks, the upcoming flagship could debut in September, bringing a completely redesigned folding mechanism, enhanced durability, and Huawei’s next-generation Kirin processor.

While Huawei has yet to officially confirm the launch date, multiple reports suggest the Mate XT2 is nearing its official debut, although it remains unclear whether it will be unveiled alongside the anticipated Mate 90 series or at a separate event.

    A New U-Shaped Triple-Fold Design

According to information shared by Chinese tipster Focus Digital, the most significant upgrade to the Mate XT2 is its new U-shaped triple-fold architecture, replacing the S-shaped folding design used by its predecessor.

The redesigned mechanism allows both side panels to fold inward simultaneously, fully enclosing the flexible main display when the device is folded.

Unlike conventional outward-folding designs, the primary screen remains completely protected inside the chassis during everyday use, minimizing the risk of scratches, impacts, and accidental damage.

This new structure is expected to offer several advantages:

    • Better protection for the flexible display
    • Reduced exposure to everyday wear and tear
    • Improved resistance to scratches and drops
    • Enhanced long-term durability
    • A cleaner and more refined folded appearance

    Improved Crease Management

One of the biggest criticisms of foldable smartphones has been the visibility of display creases. According to the latest leak, Huawei has made substantial progress in this area.

The Mate XT2 is said to combine its new U-shaped folding mechanism with Huawei’s self-developed precision hinge and updated flexible laminated materials, resulting in significantly improved crease control.

The redesigned hinge is expected to distribute stress more evenly across the flexible panel, helping the display remain flatter when fully opened while maintaining structural rigidity when folded.

If the reports prove accurate, the Mate XT2 could deliver one of the smoothest folding displays currently available in the industry.

Secondary External Display for Everyday Tasks

Another notable addition is a dedicated rear external display, allowing users to perform common tasks without unfolding the main screen.

According to the leak, the secondary display will support functions such as:

    • Making and receiving phone calls
    • Viewing and replying to messages
    • Mobile payments
    • QR code scanning
    • Quick notifications
    • Other frequently used daily functions

This approach could improve convenience while also reducing the need to repeatedly unfold the large internal display, potentially extending the lifespan of the flexible screen.

    10.2-Inch Internal Display

The Mate XT2 is expected to retain its 10.2-inch internal display, preserving the tablet-like experience introduced by the previous generation.

Several display upgrades are reportedly planned, including:

    • A 120Hz refresh rate for smoother scrolling and animations
    • UFG (Ultra-Flexible Glass) protection
    • Higher light transmission
    • Improved touch responsiveness
    • Further reduction in visible display creases

These enhancements aim to deliver a more natural viewing and interaction experience while improving overall display durability.

Powered by Huawei’s Next-Generation Kirin Chip

Under the hood, the Mate XT2 is rumored to become the first device powered by Huawei’s next-generation flagship processor, widely expected to be marketed as the Kirin 9050 series.

Although Huawei has not officially confirmed the chipset’s specifications, it is expected to deliver significant improvements in CPU performance, graphics processing, AI computing capabilities, and overall energy efficiency compared with previous Kirin platforms.

The smartphone is also expected to ship with the latest version of HarmonyOS, further strengthening Huawei’s software and hardware integration for multitasking, productivity, and large-screen experiences.

    Launch Expected in September

Huawei has not yet announced an official launch schedule for the Mate XT2. However, current reports point to a September debut, with additional information likely to emerge in the coming weeks.

If the leaked details are accurate, the Mate XT2 could represent a major evolution in foldable smartphone design. Its innovative U-shaped triple-fold mechanism, improved crease management, protected internal display, secondary external screen, and next-generation Kirin chipset suggest Huawei is continuing to push the boundaries of foldable mobile technology.

As always, these specifications remain based on leaks and industry reports until Huawei makes an official announcement.
