Huawei’s upcoming Mate 90 Pro Max is reportedly preparing a major camera upgrade, with the latest leak pointing to a large 50MP main sensor, a 200MP periscope telephoto camera, and support for an external optical lens.
According to information shared by tipster Digital Chat Station on September 17, the Mate 90 Pro Max could place a strong emphasis on long-range mobile photography. Huawei Mate series has not yet officially confirmed the complete camera specification, so the details should be treated as pre-launch information.
50MP RYYB Main Camera With Variable Aperture
The Mate 90 Pro Max is reportedly equipped with a 50MP RYYB main camera using a large 1/1.28-inch sensor. The camera is also said to support a variable aperture and an anti-glare coating.
The leaked configuration reportedly combines the main sensor with Huawei’s latest Red Maple color imaging technology, Huawei smartphone camera technology, which is designed to contribute to color reproduction and image processing.
Another notable claim is an 18EV dynamic range. If confirmed in the final hardware and software configuration, this could give the main camera more room to handle scenes containing both bright highlights and darker areas.
The combination of a large sensor, variable aperture and RYYB pixel arrangement suggests that Huawei is continuing to focus heavily on computational and hardware-based photography for its next Mate flagship.
200MP Periscope Camera Targets Long-Range Photography
The more unusual part of the leaked camera system is the reported 200MP periscope telephoto camera.
Earlier reporting also pointed to a 200MP SmartSens SCC85XS sensor with a 1/1.28-inch optical format for the Mate 90 Pro Max. The sensor is reportedly designed for high-resolution telephoto imaging and could support 4x lossless zoom under the claimed configuration.
A high-resolution periscope sensor can give a smartphone more flexibility when cropping distant subjects. Instead of relying entirely on digital enlargement, the camera can use the additional sensor resolution to retain more image information at longer focal lengths.
This could make the Mate 90 Pro Max particularly interesting for subjects such as concerts, sporting events, architecture and travel photography, where the photographer may be positioned relatively far from the subject.
External Lens Could Become Another Zoom Option
The biggest surprise in the latest leak is the mention of a “super external lens” accessory for the Mate 90 Pro Max.
The exact design and optical specifications have not been confirmed. However, some reports and online discussion have speculated that the accessory could function similarly to a teleconverter, adding additional optical magnification to the phone’s built-in camera system.
A teleconverter-style accessory would effectively extend the usable focal length of the phone. This could be useful when the built-in telephoto camera is not sufficient for extremely distant subjects.
For example, at a large concert, an external optical accessory could potentially help users capture closer views of performers and stage details from farther away. Unlike simply increasing digital zoom, an additional optical element could provide another way to increase magnification while retaining more of the original image information.
However, Huawei has yet to explain how the external lens will attach to the phone, which cameras it will support, or whether it will be sold separately.
Kirin 9050 Pro and HarmonyOS 7
The Mate 90 Pro Max is also expected to use Huawei’s Kirin 9050 Pro platform. Previous reports describe the chip as using a logic-folding architecture, while the latest Mate 90 series leaks continue to connect the Pro Max with this processor.
On the software side, the phone is reportedly expected to ship with HarmonyOS 7.
Beyond the camera system, the Mate 90 Pro Max is also rumored to feature a dual-layer OLED display, positioning the device as Huawei’s high-end flagship for the upcoming Mate 90 generation.
Four Mate 90 Models Could Arrive Together
The Mate 90 series is expected to include four flagship models: Mate 90, Mate 90 Pro, Mate 90 Pro Max, and Mate 90 RS Master.
Recent reports have pointed to a launch later in September, although Huawei’s official launch date and final specifications still need to be confirmed.
For the Mate 90 Pro Max, the combination of a large 50MP main sensor, a 200MP periscope camera and a possible external optical lens would give Huawei several different approaches to smartphone photography.
Until the company officially unveils the phone, however, the camera specifications, external-lens design, pricing and final availability should be considered unconfirmed.
