10 Free Open Source Tools for Creating Your Own VPN

VPNs continue to gain popularity as more people realize how important having privacy online is. There are many VPN services to choose from out there, but some people find it more exciting to create one of their own. We want to share some of the best open source tools available to help you deploy a VPN all your own.

    SoftEther

This is a multi-platform tool that makes it easy to set up a VPN. It has tons of features like SSL-VPN tunneling, a GUI, and an RSA authentication function. It also supports everything from SSTP to OpenVPN, L2TP, and more. If you’re wondering who can get it for free, anyone can, but there are also premium paid plans.

    Algo

Algo is a minimalist option that is best for those who are always on the move. It’s simple and confidential but doesn’t have as many features as some other tools do. However, it’s quick to use and a great choice if it fits your needs. Check personvernpanettet here.

    Streisand

This is a tool similar to Algo but with a bit more flexibility. It supports OpenConnect, OpenVPN, OpenSSH, Shadowsocks, Stunnel, WireGuard, and Tor bridge. The setup is easy and requires very little technical knowledge.

    OpenVPN

This is one of the more popular options but is more technical to operate. However, it’s a great tool and there are tons of guides out there to help you along as you used it.

    PriTunl

This tool lets you produce a cloud VPN complete with gateway links, encryption, site-to-site links, and remote access. It also has multiple authentication layers, numerous clients, and support for OpenVPN.

    StrongSwan

StrongSwan requires technical knowledge to use but implements a ton of features that are robust and useful. It implements IKEv1 and IKEv2 key protocols, supports online certificate status protocol, uses port floating and UDP encapsulation and much more.

    WireGuard

If you prefer a less tech-heavy option, WireGuard is a fantastic choice. It’s one of the easiest to use VPN tools while still being highly secure and popular among its user base.

    VyOS

VyOS is unique in that it is a network Linux Operating System that was made for firewalls and routers. If you are open to running an operating system with amazing VPN features, this is probably going to be at the top of your list.

    Freelan

This tool is a peer-to-peer software tool written in C and C++ with a focus on stability, security, and performance. Installation and running of the tool are simple and nearly anyone can handle it.

    Outline

This project isn’t a VPN, but it offers the ability for you to create one on your preferred server. It has a flawless GUI manager app and the installation is one of the simplest available.

There you have it, the top ten tools to create your own VPN server. Each of these is free and will allow you to customize your own VPN in the way you would like. It’s all up to you in the end!
