Micron Technology announced that it has begun manufacturing the world’s first LPDDR5 DRAM chip designed for the smartphone market, and the upcoming Xiaomi Mi 10 series will be the first to feature this device. This information has been confirmed by the president and co-founder of Xiaomi Lei Jun via the Weibo portal.
Jun reported that initially only the most expensive and the most efficient configurations were to use LPDDR5 memory, however, due to the significant improvement in results and production capabilities, each copy of Xiaomi Mi 10 will be equipped with LPDDR5 memory.
He said also, In February 2019, JEDEC released the LPDDR5 memory standard, which is higher than in 2014. The LPDDR4 standard has been upgraded from 3200Mbps to 5500Mbps and can transmit 44GB of data per second. LPDDR5 uses up to 16 Bank programmable and multi-clock architecture and introduces Data-Copy and Write-X instructions to reduce power consumption, as well as links ECC error correction. ”

Micron’s DRAM LPDDR5 memory has market-leading performance and brings lower power consumption to Xiaomi Mi 10. It also ensures better and stable performance. We believe that LPDDR5 will be the standard of leading smartphones by 2020.
Micron’s LDDR5 provides transfer rates of up to 6.4Gbps, twice as fast as LPDDR4 and 20% faster than LPDDR4x RAM. Data access speed has increased by 50% on LPDDR5. Besides, it consumes 20% less energy than the previous generation. Therefore, devices equipped with LPDDR can help extend battery life by 5 to 10%.
When it comes to performance, Micron Technology says LPDDR4 RAM can be used for 4K, 8K and image editing applications. However, it does not work well with AR games, 100MP images, and high-performance video editing. In addition, if LPDDR4 runs 100 applications at the same time, bottlenecks may occur. This will be overcome by LPDDR5.
