Cyber Security Tips: What to Do (and Not Do) Online

Without a doubt, the internet proved its worth to society. The internet has been useful to every individual. Daily tasks, like messaging, can be done in an instant on various social networking sites. Unfortunately, the internet can also cause trouble if you are not careful in using it. Several cybercrimes are reported all over the world each day that is why we will be sharing a few cybersecurity tips that you can follow to combat and avoid these dangerous situations online.

    1. Keep It Lowkey

You must not overshare too much of your personal information such as your credit card details, relationship status or home address, etc. on the internet. It is better to stay professional and lowkey about your information because not everyone should know those details. If you do not give out these types of information to random strangers then you should not share it with millions of people online too.

    2. Safe Browsing

In this day and age, you must know the basic rules of using the internet which includes thinking before you click. Cyber-criminals usually use click baits that would trick individuals into clicking into the website and endanger your data or infect your computer with malicious software. You should always inspect the links and make sure that they came from trusted senders before clicking them. By practicing safe browsing, you are one step ahead of these nasty hackers. Therefore, securing your data and computer.

    3. Update Antivirus Program

This is one of the most important tips that you should take note of. A computer without an antivirus is like an open house. An open house that is not secured or unprotected will eventually invite bad people like burglars or intruders.

Similar to a computer, a computer that is unprotected by an antivirus program will be open to all types of computer viruses and affect its system. You can check some Antivirus for Windows online to have the latest and complete antivirus protection for your computer. Computer viruses are capable of slowing down your device, damaging or deleting files, reformat your computer, data loss, and frequently crash your computer. This can be prevented if you regularly update your antivirus software.

    4. Secure Connection

A lot of people would often go online in public places. Most people would think it would not hurt to connect to the internet through public wifi. Well, that is where some of them are wrong, especially if you do not take safety precautions. You do not have even the slightest security when connecting to public wifi. It does not even give you the slightest control to make the connection secure.

It would be best to wait for a stable and secure connection before accessing sites that need or ask for your personal information. As much as possible, it would be safer if you connect only to private networks to ensure that the connection is secure. However, if you must connect to the internet. One thing you can do is use a secure Virtual Private Network (VPN) Connection. VPN Connection can prevent hackers from monitoring or accessing your data.

    5. Back-up Data

Take note that not all hackers are all about stealing your data and information. Some cybercriminals aim to erase or encrypt your files. Hence, there is no reason why you should not back up your data. Backing-up your data will ensure that you can recover or replace those files if these instances occur.

    6. Strong Password

Do not ever underestimate the power of the password, even though people usually come up with easy passwords for their social media accounts which makes it easy for hackers to access them. As a user, you should select a strong password to prevent cybercriminals from taking over your account. A password should be at least 15 characters long and with a combination of numbers, letters, and special characters. Make it a habit that you change your passwords regularly for extra security. You can also use password managing software, so you don’t forget any of your passwords.

    7. Downloading Online

Be careful of downloading software or even apps online. Cybercriminals would often trick users into downloading these apps or software that has malware or viruses so that they can steal your information. It can be disguised as anything on the internet that is why you should be meticulous when you download these apps, especially those from sites that are not trusted.

    8. Shop at Secured Sites

There is no harm in shopping online as long as you provide information to sites that have secured and encrypted connections. You can determine if the website is safe by checking if the address starts with HTTPS — the S in HTTPS stands for secure. A padlock next to the address bar would also mean that it is safe to share your personal information.

    9. Privacy Settings Should Be On

Everyone is all about getting your data to learn more about what you like the way marketers do. Unfortunately, they are not the only ones who are after your data. Hence, you should always keep your privacy settings on 24/7. Web browsers and mobile operating systems have privacy settings that you can activate to protect your privacy online. However, people find it difficult to find since companies are after your data.

    10. Digital Footprint

Always prioritize and track your digital footprint and monitor your accounts. Taking note of your digital footprint will make it easy for you to discover any suspicious activity. Tracking digital footprinting can be done for your online bank accounts as well as your social media accounts.

Anyone can be a victim of these cybercrimes and no one is exempted from it. It is unwise if you continue to take it lightly because hackers target all sorts of users regardless of your age or social status. Therefore, one should always be alert and proactive in following safety precautions online. Hope you found these cybersecurity tips extremely helpful. These could make a difference when it comes to securing your data. Also, remember to follow these tips regularly to stay one step ahead of cybercriminals.
