Google‘s Pixel line of smartphones could be enhanced with a model with a folding flexible screen in the near future. Hoped for at the end of the year, however, Google Pixel Fold (assumed name) would not be launched until next year, the presentation of the Pixel 6 having been accompanied by no indication of its existence.
Few details are known about this future mobile device, other than a few code names and assumptions about its characteristics, such as a 7-inch display with 120 Hz adaptive refresh thanks to an LTPO panel.
The 9to5Google site has found new indications that suggest that the Google Pixel Fold will not be entitled to the new Pixel 6 photosensors but rather to the traditional 12.2MP Sony IMX363 sensor used from the Pixel 3 to the Pixel 5.
This characteristic is associated with the code name Pipit which would be the new name of the model known until now under the term Passport and which was initially scheduled for the end of 2021.
Reuse old Pixel sensors
The main photo module will be accompanied by a 12MP IMX386 sensor for ultra-wide-angle and two IMX355 8MP modules for which 9to5Google presumes that they will serve as selfie sensors on the internal and external sides of the smartphone.
The Pixel Fold would therefore not exploit the advances in mobile photography offered by the Pixel 6, presumably to control costs and perhaps for design reasons. The Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro indeed house their photosensors in a prominent black band that could be problematic on a smartphone with a folding screen, naturally thick when closed.
And if the source evokes a launch in 2022 rather than the end of 2021, it is because it has found references pointing in this direction, in particular an “isPixel2022Foldable” which leaves little doubt. With the launch of Android 12L, the version dedicated to folding smartphones, scheduled for next March, the launch window would therefore be after the first quarter of 2022.
