Canon has unveiled the MS-500, a revolutionary camera for security monitoring and various applications. It is the world’s first camera equipped with a single-photon avalanche diode (SPAD) sensor and stands as the most sensitive non-IR camera available.
The camera features a remarkable 1-inch SPAD sensor with an impressive resolution of 3.2 megapixels, all within a B4 mount. It can support a broadcast-quality zoom lens that can capture images in near-total darkness, with a sensitivity of 0.001 lux.
Scheduled for release in September, the Canon MS-500 is priced at approximately US$25,000. The camera’s 3.2-megapixel 1-inch SPAD sensor can detect and amplify particles arriving at the pixel, allowing it to convert even a single photon into a digital signal with minimal noise, multiplying it by approximately one million times.
This unique combination of the SPAD sensor’s exceptional night vision capabilities and a high-performance broadcast lens makes the MS-500 ideal for altitude surveillance. Canon has designed the device for deployment in high-security areas like seaports, public infrastructure facilities, and national borders. Moreover, when paired with Canon’s ultra-telephoto broadcast lens, the camera can capture explicit color videos and perform advanced monitoring tasks, such as hull-type inspections, even from subjects miles away.
