Bringing Disposable Vapes on Flights: UK, US, Europe, Canada Rules

Flying with disposable vapes can be confusing due to varying airline regulations across different regions. This guide covers the rules for carrying electronic cigarettes and vaping devices on airplanes in the US, Canada, Europe, and the UK.

    US Regulations

    Electronic Cigarettes and Vaping Devices

    • Carry-On Bags: Yes (Special Instructions)
    • Checked Bags: No

Electronic smoking devices are only allowed in carry-on baggage. Passengers must take effective measures to prevent accidental activation of the heating element. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) provides examples of effective measures, such as removing the battery or placing the device in a protective case.

    Battery Restrictions

    • Lithium-ion batteries must not exceed a Watt-hour (Wh) rating of 100 Wh.
    • Lithium metal batteries must not contain more than 2 grams of lithium.

Check with your airline for any limitations on the number of devices you can carry for personal use.

    Safety Advisory for Electronic Cigarettes

Transport Canada advises that electronic cigarettes must be carried in the cabin and not in checked baggage due to fire risks from accidental activation.

    Key Points:

    • Spare batteries are allowed but must be carried in carry-on baggage.
    • Each spare battery must be individually protected to prevent short circuits (e.g., taping over terminals or using protective pouches).
    • Do not recharge e-cigarettes or batteries on board the aircraft.

    • Quebec: 1-514-633-3400
    • Pacific: 1-604-666-2955

    Europe Regulations

    Dangerous Goods Information

Several everyday items, including e-cigarettes and lithium batteries, can be dangerous when transported by air. For safety:

    • Portable electronic devices (PEDs) such as cameras, laptops, and phones should be carried in hand baggage.
    • E-cigarettes must always be in hand baggage and should never be placed in checked baggage.
    • Spare batteries must be transported in carry-on baggage and protected to prevent short-circuits.
    • Do not recharge e-cigarettes or spare batteries on board the aircraft.

    Lithium Battery Guidelines:

    • Damaged, defective, or recalled lithium batteries should not be carried.
    • Devices must be switched to airplane mode if used on board.

    UK Regulations

    Carrying Vaping Devices

For safety, smoking/vaping devices must be placed in hand baggage and carried in the cabin. They must be packaged to prevent accidental activation.

    Liquid Components:

    • Follow aviation security requirements for liquids if carrying e-liquid.
    • If your larger cabin bag is checked in or removed at the gate, you must remove vaping devices and carry them in your smaller hand bag or on your person.

    Conclusion

When flying with disposable vapes, always carry them in your hand baggage and follow the specific guidelines for your region. By adhering to these rules, you can ensure a safe and hassle-free travel experience.

For more detailed information, consult the respective transportation authorities or your airline.
