Igeekphone News, July 14 – Nintendo is reportedly exploring an OLED version of the Nintendo Switch 2, with one of the most significant rumored upgrades being a higher-resolution display. According to the latest industry reports, the new model could move from the current 1280 × 720 HD panel to a 1920 × 1080 Full HD OLED screen, delivering noticeably sharper visuals in handheld mode.
If the project moves forward, Samsung Display is expected to remain Nintendo’s OLED panel supplier, continuing the partnership established with the original Nintendo Switch OLED, which launched in 2021.
Launch Timeline Still Depends on Production Costs
While the prospect of a Switch 2 OLED has generated considerable excitement, the device has reportedly not yet been finalized. One of the biggest challenges facing Nintendo is manufacturing cost.
OLED panels remain significantly more expensive than traditional LCD displays. At the same time, the prices of key components—including memory chips and other semiconductor parts—have increased in recent years. As a result, Nintendo is said to be carefully balancing premium hardware upgrades against maintaining a competitive retail price.
According to current supply chain information, if Nintendo approves the project, development could begin by the end of 2026, with mass production targeted for late 2027 or early 2028.
Following Nintendo’s Established Product Strategy
The reported timeline would also align with Nintendo’s previous hardware release strategy for the original Switch family.
The first-generation lineup expanded gradually over several years:

Interestingly, despite introducing different designs and features, all three first-generation models retained the same 1280 × 720 HD display resolution. Full HD OLED Could Enhance the Handheld Experience
A 1080p OLED display would offer several advantages over the existing LCD panel, including:

- Higher contrast with true blacks
- More vibrant colors
- Better HDR-like visual impact for supported games

While docked gameplay already benefits from higher output resolutions, a native Full HD handheld display would make modern titles appear noticeably crisper when played on the console itself.

Even if Nintendo proceeds with the OLED model, pricing could ultimately determine its market success.
The original Switch OLED was well received because it delivered meaningful display improvements while keeping the price increase relatively modest. A similar strategy would likely be necessary for the Switch 2 OLED, particularly as consumers become increasingly price-conscious amid rising hardware costs.
If the premium over the standard Switch 2 remains reasonable, an OLED version could become the preferred choice for players who primarily enjoy handheld gaming. However, a substantial price increase may encourage many buyers to stick with the standard LCD model.

Although Nintendo has yet to officially announce an OLED variant of the Switch 2, reports suggest the company is actively evaluating the possibility. A Full HD OLED display, combined with the visual benefits of OLED technology, could make it one of the most attractive upgrades in the Switch family to date.
For now, the project’s future appears to depend largely on manufacturing costs and Nintendo’s ability to deliver premium hardware without pushing the retail price beyond what consumers are willing to pay.
