Apple’s Most Expensive iPhone? Foldable iPhone Ultra Reportedly Set for September 8 Launch, but Sales May Come Later

Apple’s first foldable iPhone is reportedly facing further production challenges, with supply shortages and engineering issues potentially delaying its commercial availability beyond the company’s expected 2026 autumn launch event.

According to a report published by technology media outlet ChannelNews on August 13, Apple is planning to unveil its first foldable smartphone, tentatively referred to as the iPhone Ultra, alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max at its 2026 autumn product event on September 8, 2026.

However, unlike the conventional iPhone models, Apple may not immediately announce the iPhone Ultra’s retail price or put the device on sale at the same time.

iPhone Ultra Could Debut on September 8

Apple is reportedly preparing to hold its major autumn hardware event on September 8, where it is expected to introduce the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max.

The long-rumored foldable iPhone is also expected to make its first official appearance at the event. The device is widely expected to feature a book-style foldable design and could be marketed under the iPhone Ultra name, although Apple has not confirmed the name.

The reported launch strategy would represent a significant departure from Apple’s conventional iPhone release schedule. Rather than making all newly announced models available at the same time, Apple could introduce the foldable model first and delay its commercial launch.

Apple Reportedly Won’t Reveal the Price Immediately

One of the most notable claims is that Apple may not disclose the iPhone Ultra’s final retail price during the September event.

According to supply-chain sources cited in the report, the foldable iPhone is currently facing supply constraints, while Apple has encountered problems during pre-sale testing and production verification.

The sources reportedly described the production difficulties as greater than initially expected.

The two most challenging components are said to be the hinge mechanism and foldable display, both of which are critical to the durability and reliability of a foldable smartphone.

Unlike conventional iPhones, a foldable device requires Apple to coordinate a significantly more complicated hardware system. The hinge must withstand repeated opening and closing while maintaining a thin profile, and the flexible display needs to balance durability, image quality and resistance to visible creasing.

Mass Production Has Reportedly Been Delayed

The production schedule for Apple’s foldable iPhone may also have been pushed back several times.

Apple was reportedly planning to begin mass production in June 2026, before postponing the target to early August. The latest information suggests that production has now been delayed again.

One industry insider reportedly estimated that additional engineering verification could result in a delay of up to two months.

If the delay continues, Apple could announce the iPhone Ultra in September but postpone its actual retail availability until a later date.

This would also explain why the company may choose not to reveal final pricing at the initial launch event.

iPhone Ultra Could Become Apple’s Most Expensive iPhone

The foldable iPhone is also expected to carry a substantial premium.

Because of the complexity of its components and the reported supply constraints, industry sources expect the iPhone Ultra to cost significantly more than Apple’s current flagship models.

In Australia, the device could reportedly reach around A$3,699, which is approximately US$2,400 or RMB 17,600 based on approximate current exchange rates. Actual regional pricing could vary considerably depending on taxes, storage configuration and local market conditions.

If the reported pricing proves accurate, the iPhone Ultra would become Apple’s most expensive mainstream smartphone to date, positioned well above the company’s existing Pro Max models.

Foldable iPhone May Not Launch Alongside iPhone 18 Pro

Perhaps the strongest indication that Apple is facing production difficulties comes from reports concerning its retail launch schedule.

According to ChannelNews, Australian telecommunications operators and a major retailer have reportedly indicated that the iPhone Ultra will not go on sale at the same time as the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max.

This means Apple could follow a two-stage strategy:

    • September 8: iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max and iPhone Ultra are unveiled.
    • September: iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max enter Apple’s normal sales cycle.
    • Later date: iPhone Ultra becomes available after production and engineering issues are resolved.
    • Pricing: Final iPhone Ultra pricing may be announced closer to its commercial release.

Such a strategy would allow Apple to officially introduce its first foldable iPhone while giving its supply chain additional time to reach sufficient production volumes.

Why the Foldable iPhone Is So Important for Apple

Apple has remained one of the major smartphone manufacturers without a commercially available foldable phone. Samsung, Huawei, Google, Xiaomi, OPPO and other manufacturers have already established foldable product lines in various markets.

Apple’s entry into the category could therefore have a significant impact on the premium smartphone market.

However, Apple is unlikely to compete purely on price. The reported A$3,699 price would position the iPhone Ultra firmly in the ultra-premium segment, suggesting that Apple may be targeting consumers willing to pay a substantial premium for a combination of a large foldable display, premium materials and the iOS ecosystem.

The reported production difficulties also highlight the engineering challenges involved in creating a foldable iPhone that meets Apple’s standards for durability and reliability.

A Major Change to Apple’s Traditional iPhone Strategy

If the latest report is accurate, 2026 could mark an unusual iPhone launch for Apple.

The company may unveil the iPhone Ultra together with the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, while delaying both its final pricing announcement and retail availability.

That approach would give Apple more flexibility to manage limited initial supply while continuing to refine the hinge and foldable display.

For consumers, however, the biggest question may be the final price and release date. With reports suggesting a price potentially approaching A$3,699, the iPhone Ultra could become not only Apple’s first foldable iPhone but also its most expensive smartphone ever.

For now, Apple has not officially confirmed the iPhone Ultra name, September 8 launch date, pricing, specifications or delayed sales schedule. These details should therefore be treated as industry reports and supply-chain information rather than confirmed Apple announcements.
