How to Read Vape Battery and E-Liquid Specifications: A Practical Buyer’s Guide

Brady CottonBy Brady CottonOctober 16, 2026

A vape product listing can contain plenty of numbers without making it easy to understand what you are actually buying. Battery capacity might be shown in mAh, power in watts, and e-liquid volume in millilitres, while nicotine strength may appear as a percentage or a value in mg/mL. Puff-count claims add another number, but they rarely tell the whole story.

To understand how battery design affects charging convenience and long-term use, read our guide to 18650 vs built-in battery vape mods.

Understanding these specifications helps you compare products more accurately, recognize misleading comparisons, and identify important safety information. It also helps explain why two devices with similar headline figures may perform differently in everyday use.

This guide breaks down the most common vape battery and e-liquid specifications, explains what each measurement means, and shows which details deserve the closest attention when reading a product page.

    1. Start With Battery Capacity: What Does mAh Mean?

Battery capacity is commonly expressed in milliamp-hours, abbreviated as mAh. It describes the amount of electric charge a battery can deliver under specified conditions.

For example, a device advertised with a 1,000mAh battery has a higher stated charge capacity than one rated at 500mAh. However, that does not automatically mean it will last exactly twice as long. Actual runtime also depends on power consumption, battery condition, operating temperature, and how frequently the device is used.

When comparing rechargeable vape devices, treat mAh as a useful starting point rather than a complete measure of battery life.

Why battery capacity is not the same as runtime

A device that consumes more power may deplete its battery faster, even if it has a larger capacity. Display lighting, heating requirements, operating modes, and the frequency of activation can also influence how quickly energy is used.

Battery capacity alone cannot reliably predict the number of puffs or days of use. If a manufacturer publishes a runtime estimate, check whether the conditions behind that estimate are explained.

    2. Understand Battery Voltage and Wattage

Two other specifications often appear in technical descriptions: voltage, measured in volts (V), and power, measured in watts (W).

Voltage describes the electrical potential difference supplied by a battery or circuit. Wattage describes the rate at which electrical energy is used or transferred.

For an electrical load, power can be expressed as:

Here, (P) is power in watts, (V) is voltage in volts, and (I) is current in amperes.

This relationship helps explain why battery capacity and device power should not be compared as if they measure the same thing. A battery’s mAh rating describes charge capacity, while wattage describes power consumption or output under particular conditions.

Some products offer adjustable power modes. Higher-power settings can increase energy consumption and may change heating behavior, but the actual result depends on the device’s design and control system. Do not assume that a higher wattage automatically means better flavor, longer battery life, or superior performance.

    3. Battery Capacity and Energy: Why Wh Can Be Useful

Some battery specifications include watt-hours (Wh), a measure of energy capacity. Unlike mAh alone, Wh incorporates both charge capacity and voltage.

    A simplified conversion is:

For example, a battery rated at 1,000mAh and a nominal voltage of 3.7V has a nominal energy rating of approximately 3.7Wh.

This calculation is useful when comparing batteries with different nominal voltages, provided the specifications are accurate and use comparable measurement conventions. It is not a direct prediction of usable runtime because conversion losses, discharge limits, and device efficiency still matter.

For everyday shopping, mAh is commonly displayed on product pages, while Wh can provide additional context when available.

    4. What Does E-Liquid Capacity in mL Tell You?

E-liquid volume is usually measured in millilitres (mL). It describes how much liquid a tank, cartridge, or pod is designed to hold.

A larger stated capacity means more liquid can be stored at one time, but it does not guarantee a proportionally longer usage period. Liquid consumption varies with device power, coil design, draw duration, and frequency of use.

It is also important to distinguish capacity per pod from total liquid included in a package. A product bundle may contain multiple cartridges, and the total volume across the package may be different from the capacity of a single cartridge.

When reading a listing, look for these details:

    • Capacity of each pod or cartridge
    • Number of pods included
    • Total stated e-liquid volume
    • Whether the device and pods are sold together
    • Whether the product is refillable or uses prefilled pods

Do not infer the liquid capacity from the device’s external size or its advertised puff count. Check the manufacturer’s specifications and the package description.

    5. Nicotine Strength: Percentage Versus mg/mL

Nicotine strength is one of the most important specifications to understand, particularly when comparing products sold in different markets.

It may be displayed as milligrams per millilitre (mg/mL) or as a percentage. These units describe concentration, not the total amount of liquid in the pod.

For a simple mass-per-volume concentration, the approximate relationship is:

    • 1% by mass/volume = 10mg/mL
    • 2% by mass/volume = 20mg/mL
    • 5% by mass/volume = 50mg/mL

These conversions assume that the percentage is expressed as grams per 100mL. Product labels and regional rules may use different conventions, so verify the manufacturer’s definition before comparing values.

Concentration is not the same as total nicotine content

Consider a hypothetical pod containing 2mL of liquid at a concentration of 20mg/mL. The nominal nicotine content is:

That figure represents the nicotine contained in the liquid, not the amount absorbed by a person. Absorption depends on the product, how it is used, and individual factors.

A higher concentration does not make a product suitable for everyone. Nicotine is addictive, and nicotine-containing products carry health risks. Non-smokers and people below the legal purchasing age should not use them.

    6. Nicotine Salts and Freebase Nicotine

Some product descriptions distinguish between nicotine salts and freebase nicotine. These terms refer to different chemical forms used in e-liquids.

Nicotine salts are often formulated to provide a different inhalation experience at a given concentration, while freebase formulations may feel different in the throat. The exact experience depends on the formulation, concentration, device, and individual response.

The label alone does not tell you everything about a product’s strength or risk. When comparing e-liquids, check the actual nicotine concentration and product labeling rather than assuming one formulation is inherently safe or appropriate.

    7. Coil Resistance: What Does Ω Mean?

Coil resistance is measured in ohms, represented by the symbol Ω. Some device listings identify a compatible coil or pod by its resistance rating.

Resistance affects the electrical behavior of the heating element, but it should not be interpreted in isolation. The device’s power regulation, coil construction, airflow, and intended operating range all affect performance.

A lower resistance does not automatically mean a better device, and it is not a reliable shortcut for estimating battery life or flavor quality. Use only compatible components and follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Do not attempt to install an arbitrary coil or change electrical configurations outside the device’s supported range.

For replacement-pod systems, verify the exact compatible model rather than choosing a cartridge based on resistance alone.

For a more detailed explanation of coil specifications, see our guide to Vaporesso GTX coil resistance, wattage, and compatibility.

    8. Puff Count: Why the Largest Number Can Be Misleading

Puff count is a prominent marketing figure on many disposable and prefilled-pod vape listings. It estimates how many puffs a product may deliver under particular test conditions, but those conditions are not always clearly stated.

Actual results can differ because of:

    • Puff duration and frequency
    • Power or operating mode
    • Coil and device design
    • E-liquid consumption
    • Battery performance
    • The manufacturer’s testing method

A product advertised for a certain maximum number of puffs should not be assumed to deliver that number for every user.

Puff count is also not directly comparable to battery capacity or e-liquid volume. A higher advertised puff count does not, by itself, establish better value, longer battery life, or lower nicotine exposure.

For a more meaningful comparison, examine battery capacity, liquid volume, replacement costs, product quality, and the clarity of the manufacturer’s specifications.

    9. Charging Specifications and Battery Safety

Rechargeable devices may list a charging connection, input voltage, input current, or charging time. These figures describe different aspects of the charging process.

USB Type-C identifies a connector type; it does not by itself guarantee a particular charging speed or power level. The actual charging rate depends on the device’s circuitry, the power source, the cable, and the supported charging protocol.

Before charging, follow the instructions supplied with the specific device. Use a suitable, undamaged charging cable and power source, and avoid charging a device that has a damaged battery, visible swelling, unusual heating, or other signs of failure. Do not leave a charging device unattended or charge it in a place where heat can accumulate.

If a battery becomes unusually hot, leaks, swells, or produces an unusual smell, stop using it. Do not attempt to open or repair a damaged lithium-ion battery yourself. Follow local guidance for safe handling and disposal.

For battery-related guidance, consult the manufacturer’s documentation and the relevant safety authority in your region.

    10. How to Compare Two Vape Product Listings

When two products have similar designs but different specifications, compare the measurements by category rather than relying on a single headline number.

Specification What it tells you What it does not guarantee
Battery capacity (mAh) Rated electric charge capacity Exact runtime or puff count
Battery energy (Wh) Rated energy capacity Exact usable energy in the device
Power (W) Electrical power under specified conditions Better flavor or longer battery life
E-liquid capacity (mL) Volume of liquid a tank or pod holds How long it will last
Nicotine concentration (mg/mL) Nicotine concentration in the liquid Amount absorbed by the user
Coil resistance (Ω) Electrical resistance of the coil Compatibility or quality on its own
Advertised puff count Manufacturer’s estimated puff total A guaranteed number of puffs

A useful comparison also includes package contents, warranty information, replacement-part availability, and compliance with the regulations that apply in your market.

    11. A Quick Checklist Before Buying

Before placing an order, use this checklist to review the listing:

    • Confirm the exact product model and version.

    • Check whether the battery is rechargeable or replaceable.

    • Compare battery capacity and, where available, energy capacity.

    • Verify the stated e-liquid volume per pod and per package.

    • Check nicotine concentration and the unit used on the label.

    • Confirm compatible pods, coils, or other replacement parts.

    • Treat maximum puff counts as estimates rather than guarantees.

    • Review charging instructions, warranty terms, and seller policies.

    • Verify that the product complies with local laws and age restrictions.

If a key specification is missing or contradictory, check the manufacturer’s official documentation or ask the seller for clarification before purchasing.

    Final Thoughts

Reading vape battery and e-liquid specifications becomes easier when each number is understood in its proper context. mAh describes charge capacity, Wh provides a measure of energy, watts describe power, millilitres measure liquid volume, and mg/mL indicates nicotine concentration. Coil resistance and puff-count estimates add further information, but neither should be used as a standalone measure of quality.

The most reliable buying decision comes from comparing several verified specifications together, checking the exact package contents, and understanding the limitations of marketing claims. A clear product listing should make these details easy to find rather than forcing buyers to guess.

Most importantly, technical specifications describe a product; they do not establish that it is risk-free. Follow the manufacturer’s safety instructions and local regulations, and remember that nicotine is addictive.
