Huawei Mate 10 Tear Down: What We Have Found Inside The First AI Chip Smartphone

The world’s first smartphone with an artificial intelligence was released, and it was done by Huawei. A few months ago Huawei announced the first mobile SoC coming with AI, Kirin 970. The first phone to support this awesome chip was considered to be the Huawei Mate 10 set to launch on October 16. The phones with a 5.9-inch 2K display and biaxial 3D curved glass back cover, dual cameras area also specially designed special texture, and vacuum Plating process polished horizontal stripes. So it’s quite interesting to see what components the Huawei Mate 10 is made of. Plus, this phone continues to bring the shooting joy coming our way from Leica lenses. But there are too many key features we should pay attention to as well.

Putting an AI component into a mobile chip requires too many changes in the architecture of the chip as well as in other hardware parts. So let’s take a quick glance at the innovations brought by the Huawei Kirin 970 chip and recall the selling points of the Huawei Mate 10.

The Kirin 970 features an octa-core architecture using A73 and A53 cores. Huawei has chosen the energy-efficient heterogeneous computing architecture named HiAI with the first built-in independent NPU (Neural Network Processing Unit) to greatly enhance the AI power. There are over 5.5 billion transistors. Thus it has the most transistors. For example, the Snapdragon 835 comes with 3.1 billion transistors, while Apple’s A11 has 4.3 billion transistors. Thanks to the most advanced TSMC 10nm process node, the overall process efficiency has been increased by 37.5%.

It’s the world’s first chip to use a new technology allowing users to use the first SIM card to surf via LTE and use the VoLTE in the LTE network via the second card. And the mobile network has reached an unprecedented complex spectrum fragmentation affecting the user experience. So Huawei decided to come in with three major signals technical improvements (4 × 4 MIMO multi-input, 5CC CA carrier aggregation, and256QAM signal modulation) to solve this problem.

It’s also the first to support LTE Cat.18 (download) and Cat.13 (upload). So it’s capable of providing the industry’s highest peak download rate of 1.2Gbps. Those who are interested in what components the Huawei Mate 10 comes with, below are the dissembling photos of the phone. The 4000mAh battery provides a day-long life apart of this, the Kirin 970 chip is paired with a 4GB of RAM and 64GB of ROM. However, one of the selling points of this device is the Leica dual-camera using 20MP+12MP sensors. They come with an aperture of f/1.6, AI-powered bokeh effect and real-time recognition.

Power off the phone and remove the SIM card tray

After removing the rear cover, we found that the inside of the phone has made a perfect waterproof treatment, the motherboard is covered by the protective plate, and the battery is covered with a layer of graphite sticker.
We first unscrew the eight screws securing the motherboard protective plate. Uncover the graphite sticker on the battery.

You can see the back of the motherboard protection plate also has a graphite sticker, it can be said that Mate 10 has done enough work in the heat dissipation.

Ahead we disconnect the battery connector, and then disconnect all the BTB and RF connector. In order to prevent interference between chips, all the chips are covered with metal shields.

The chips on the back of the motherboard also covered with a metal shield, and the metal shield covering by a layer of thermal grease.

From left to right is the 3.5mm headphone jack, rear camera, and front camera.

Huawei Mate 10 comes with a 3.82V, 4000mAh, 15.3Wh Li-polymer battery. It supports 4.5V/5A low voltage fast charging technology.

Remove 6 screws securing the loudspeaker and take out the loudspeaker and bottom board.

A USB Type-C interface and many metal contacts are integrated on the bottom board.

Lastly, we hope this teardown review will become very useful for safely open your phone in any query.
