    Are QR Codes Safe?

Brady CottonBy Brady CottonJune 8, 2022

With the world rapidly moving towards digital solutions, you’ve probably heard of QR code for food menu. If you’ve ever wondered what they are, how to use them and whether or not they’re safe to use, you’re in the right place!

We’ve made this super easy guide for you to follow. Let’s get straight to it!

    QR Code: Definition

QR stands for quick response. And while QR codes may seem complicated, they’re super easy to use and are capable of storing large sets of data. Because they’re so quick to interpret the data stored in them, they’re called quick response codes.

    What are Quick Response Codes?

QR codes are similar to bar codes. They’re made up of black and white squares and are able to store data in pixels. However, one major thing that sets the two apart is that while bar codes can only be read in one direction, QR codes can be read in two. That is, right to the left and top to bottom. Reading these codes in two directions allows users to store significantly more data than conventional bar codes.

They’re commonly used in supply chains, marketing and advertising campaigns. These codes can be scanned using either the in-built camera application in mobile phones, scanners or third-party scanning applications.

Much more recent use of QR codes has been tracking down the contraction of COVID-19 and slowing down the spread of this deadly virus.

Fun fact: The first QR code was made in 1994 by Denso Wave, a popular Japanese company that needed a foolproof method to track vehicles and spare parts!

    How to Scan QR Codes

QR codes are pretty simple to workaround. The in-built camera application is good enough to get the job done if you’ve got the latest mobile phone. However, older phones may require a third-party application. These are readily available on Google Play and the App Store.

To scan a QR code, follow these simple steps:

    1. Open your camera or QR reader application
    2. Point your device in the direction of the code. Make sure the lighting and distance are adequate
    3. The data will instantly appear on your screen

QR Codes: How Secure are They?

Now finally, let’s address the elephant in the room.

Are QR codes safe to scan?

The answer isn’t as straightforward. Since QR codes are quite complicated in their form pattern, they’re not easy to read for humans, so they’re an easy target for attackers to alter and embed malicious malware.

To steer clear of these problems, it’s always good to follow some safety practices such as:

    1. Stay vigilant of suspicious texts or logos. Does the QR code seem legit?
    2. Once you’ve scanned a QR code, a notification will pop up. Visit the URL through an encrypted link and stay wary of malicious signs.
