How Long Should a Background Check Take?

Brady CottonBy Brady CottonAugust 13, 2020
Facebook Twitter Pinterest LinkedIn Tumblr Email

Conducting screening and background checks on potential employees is a vital part of any hiring process. In most cases, job screening can take anywhere from two to five working days. It all relies on the sort of background check that the client is conducting and a myriad of other situations.

While many employers want the fastest possible turnaround, it is significant to be both comprehensive and perfect. Background and screening checks help mitigate risk at a later stage and ensure that employees represent the company’s actual value.

There are several facets of pre-employment screening. Depending on the company, business, and job responsibilities, background checks may include national police checks online, reference checks, employment verification, education verification, driving records, drug testing, and social media monitoring. All of these things are significant, and they can all take time.

Here are some necessary pre-employment screening checks that can substantially impact the overall performance, productivity, and representation of the organization.

Cutting down on red tape procedures

In an attempt to speed up the process and make it more efficient, hiring managers should inform the job prospect from the very first interview being conducted that he or she will be required to undergo background screening checks that are part of the standard screening processes.

As the process tends to be time-sensitive, the hiring manager should not leave the new and prospective employee to deal with the issue of background checks on their own. Afterall, the process can be tiresome and tedious for someone that is inexperienced in such items.

Going to the local police station can be a tedious process that the candidate is likely to put off for several days (as there are many manual aspects involved), and, anyway, such background screening checks that are carried out by way of traditional processes take a very long time as most government institutions tend to be understaffed with lagging processes that in many instances don’t meet the demands of the modern times. The process of sending your new recruits to a local police station and leaving the entire background check process to them might take weeks (in some cases months), and this is unacceptable for a recruiting manager that is under due pressure to find a suitable staff member for the company within a limited timeframe.

So let’s look into the various types of background checks that are commonly used in the modern era, and how long they tend to take:

    Identification Check

Depending on the form, some identification tests are almost immediate, while others can take up to two days. Identity tests can include verifying the specifics of a driver’s license or passport, or any national ID card. More risk-averse employers may choose to use more comprehensive search sources to complete identity checks.

    Credit Check

The credit check can also take 24 to 48 hours to complete. It provides an outline of the candidate’s credit history and involves searching for the credit bureau documents.

    Verification of Employment

This form of test can be more complex and can take longer. It involves contacting the staff or human resources offices of the related past employers and may also include proof of times of self-employment with the assistance of the applicant. It can take up to two to three days for the review of overseas workers or even longer. In some situations, some former employers will not share information without; that’s why the claimant’s signature release is needed.

    Academic Verification

Confirming a candidate’s academic achievement usually involves contact with different schools and universities, which takes a little time. It usually takes up to 3 to 4 working days for a typical report (keep in mind that it can be even longer during holidays when schools may be understaffed). If there are international educational listings on the applicant’s record, the investigators must add a few days to the timeframe. Most universities can clarify when the applicant was a student and what degrees they received, although some will request a release form before disclosing that kind of material.

    National Police Checks

The duration varies considerably, based on where you recruit. In Australia, agencies complete the record checks mostly within one to two business days. A police check can be ordered from a state based service like a victorian police check for the state of Victoria, or it can be a national police check. Keep in mind that a state based check and a national check is essentially the same thing. Both checks take into account disclosable court outcomes in accordance with the spent convictions scheme.

Such methods may include a manual record review, coordination with officials across various states and territories, or in-depth research where investigators find several matches.

    Bottom Line

History searches can also be slowed down by uncertainty about names. Organizations also need to dig through vast repositories for any version of a name, such as Steve, Steven, Stephen. If the claimant has a familiar name, the Department may have to review and cross-check the documents to guarantee that they have the correct client.

The easiest way to speed up the background checks is to supply the Department with all the records and paperwork needed and ensure that the evidence is accurate. For instance, the applicant must give the address to all previous employers and references. Employers may also speed up the process by using an organization that makes the information available online.
