Igeekphone, July 20 – Chinese AI startup Moonshot AI (also known as Dark Side of the Moon) has temporarily suspended new consumer subscriptions for its Kimi AI assistant following an overwhelming surge in demand after the launch of its latest Kimi K3 large language model.
In an official statement titled “Explanation on the Shortage of Computing Power and the Suspension of Membership Access,” the company said it is prioritizing existing subscribers while rapidly expanding its computing infrastructure to accommodate growing demand.
Unprecedented Demand After Kimi K3 Launch
According to Moonshot AI, the release of Kimi K3 generated far more traffic than anticipated.
Over the past 48 hours, the number of user requests has increased dramatically, pushing the company’s AI computing clusters close to their operational capacity.
To maintain service quality for current paying customers, Moonshot AI has decided to temporarily suspend new consumer (C-end) subscriptions.
The company emphasized that existing subscribers will continue to enjoy uninterrupted access to their membership benefits while additional computing resources are brought online.
Expanding AI Computing Capacity
Moonshot AI said it is actively accelerating the deployment of new computing infrastructure.
As additional GPU clusters and computing resources become operational, the company plans to gradually reopen subscription registrations before eventually restoring normal access for new users.

The primary Kimi subscription will cover services including:

The surge in demand follows the launch of Kimi K3, which Moonshot AI describes as the world’s largest open-source AI model by parameter count.
The model reportedly features 2.8 trillion parameters and includes several advanced capabilities, including:

- Enhanced software engineering capabilities
