TV sitcoms began rising to popularity in the 1960s and remain one of the public’s favourite genres to this day. Sitcoms can entertain and improve the viewer’s overall mood, as they can relate to the characters, their encounters, and jokes shown within the show. Viewers become so engrossed and involved in the show as tend to they take interest in the main character or characters, and continue watching episodes to see what will happen next. Watching older sitcoms is more apparent within older viewers as they enjoy the nostalgia and connecting back to old times by taking a trip down memory lane through watching shows on the TV. Here we have a look at older, classic British sitcoms that are still highly popular and viewed daily by the British public.

     The Inbetweeners

The Inbetweeners premiered in the UK in 2009 on Freeview TVs Channel 4 and E4; the show is centred around four teens who all display some form of social issues. It follows their daily life through high school, and the troubles, lessons, and experiences encountered in the dramatic phase of adolescence. The show became an extremely popular British sitcom, especially within the teenage age group, as episodes were extremely relatable and provided a sense of hilarity to how realistic it was to the high school phase in Britain.

    Only Fools and Horses

Dating back to the 1980s, Only Fools and Horses appears to still be a British favourite as Freeview TV continues to broadcast the show on channel GOLD, several times throughout the day. The show featured around the Trotter family, and their get rich quick schemes, holds the record for the highest-rated comedy, and their idiotic personalities can still be seen on TV today if you have missed out over the years. https://aerialandsatelliteexpress.co.uk  can help if you are looking to have aerial or Freeview installations to watch the show on live TV.

    Still Game

Centred around two Scottish pensioners, Jack and Victor, Still Game has been a highly popular show ever since broadcasting on BBC One in late 2002. The show is primarily most popular amongst those of Scottish background, as they can relate to the Scottish jokes and humour throughout the show. The fictional home of the two main characters relates closely to different towns in Scotland and viewers can laugh and enjoy Jack and Victor reflecting on life in the past, making it one of the most popular British sitcoms amongst the Scottish especially.

    Little Britain

Little Britain was televised in 2003 and created by comedians and actors David Walliams and Matt Lucas. Throughout the show, the pair portrayed different types of main characters in several sketched storylines which provides the viewer with fits of laughter. The dark comedy, has to be taken light-heartedly and has received some criticism and backlash over the years however, those who can see and accept the humour within it understand why it is such a popular British sitcom.

    Gavin & Stacey

The popular Gavin & Stacey is based on two main characters from different areas, who meet each other through the internet. Once they decide to meet, they bring together both sides of their lives and encourage their friends to spark up a romance too. With actors and comedians like James Corden and Ruth Jones, it is no surprise why this is one of the most loved British sitcoms. As well as this, their Christmas Special is so iconic that it comes back around during the festive season each year to bring back the laughter once again.

    The Vicar of Dibley

Starting originally on BBC One, the series features comedian and actor Dawn French as an iconic and outspoken female priest and her interactions with the local residents of the town. Airing from 1994-2007, the show was enjoyed by viewers on live TV for around 13 years and can be considered an extremely popular British sitcom especially amongst older viewers who can understand French’s humour.

    The Office

Broadcasted in 2001 on BBC Two, the British series of The Office created by and featuring Ricky Gervais documents the life inside of the office for the staff working for a paper company. Gervais portrays the character of the boss within the series and the daily life and personalities of those within the office are demonstrated leaving the UK viewers chuckling.
