Qualcomm Launches Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 V Series with 8-Core GPU Design for Mid-Range Flagships

Igeekphone News August 4, 2026 – Qualcomm has officially introduced a new member of its flagship mobile chipset family, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 V Series (also referred to as the 5th-generation Snapdragon 8 Supreme Edition V Series). Carrying the model number SM8850-1-AB, the new processor becomes the fourth variant in Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 lineup, following the standard edition, high-frequency edition, and seven-core version.

Positioned as a mid-range flagship “performance-focused” chipset, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 V Series is expected to power sub-brand flagship smartphones priced around 3,000–4,000 yuan in the second half of 2026. It aims to deliver flagship-level performance while reducing costs through selective hardware adjustments.

    CPU Performance Remains Fully Intact

Unlike many trimmed-down flagship processors, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 V Series reportedly keeps the same CPU configuration as the standard version.

The chip uses Qualcomm’s Oryon CPU architecture with an 8-core 2+6 design, including:

    • 2 Prime performance cores clocked up to 4.6GHz
    • 6 performance cores clocked up to 3.62GHz

By maintaining the same CPU architecture and frequencies, Qualcomm is expected to preserve strong everyday performance, multitasking capability, and application responsiveness.

GPU Reduced from 12 CU to 8 CU

The main difference between the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 V Series and the standard version comes from the graphics subsystem.

The integrated GPU has reportedly been reduced from 12 Compute Units (CU) to 8 CU, while retaining the Adreno 840 GPU architecture.

    Key GPU specifications include:

    • Adreno 840 GPU
    • 1.2GHz GPU frequency
    • 8 Compute Units
    • 12MB dedicated HPM high-speed graphics memory

Despite the reduction in GPU cores, the chipset continues to support advanced gaming technologies, including:

    • Hardware ray tracing
    • Unreal Engine 5 optimization
    • Snapdragon gaming features
    • Major graphics APIs compatibility

This means the new chip should still provide strong gaming performance, particularly for high-refresh-rate mobile gaming.

Advanced AI Capabilities with Hexagon NPU

The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 V Series maintains Qualcomm’s latest AI architecture, combining GPU acceleration with the Hexagon NPU for improved on-device intelligence.

    The integrated AI system supports:

    • Multi-precision mixed AI computing
    • Generative AI security protection
    • Low-power AI processing
    • Real-time sensor and voice analysis

    The chipset’s Sensing Hub includes:

    • Two mini NPUs
    • Two ISPs

This allows the device to process voice commands, sensor information, and contextual AI tasks efficiently while reducing power consumption.

    X85 5G Modem and Wi-Fi 7 Connectivity

For connectivity, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 V Series integrates Qualcomm’s X85 5G modem, supporting advanced mobile networks.

    Communication features include:

    • 5G Advanced support
    • Up to 12.5Gbps peak download speed
    • FastConnect 7900 connectivity platform
    • Wi-Fi 7 support
    • Bluetooth 6.0 LE Audio
    • Ultra-wideband (UWB) support

These features bring flagship-level wireless connectivity to more affordable smartphones.

Professional Imaging with Triple 20-bit AI ISP

Photography capabilities remain a major strength of the new chipset.

The platform includes three 20-bit AI ISP processors, enabling advanced computational photography features.

    Supported camera capabilities include:

    • Up to 32MP single-camera capture
    • 32MP triple-camera zero-latency capture
    • 8K HDR video recording

The improved ISP architecture is designed to enhance:

    • HDR processing
    • Low-light photography
    • AI scene recognition
    • Real-time image optimization

Supports High-Resolution Displays and Flagship Memory

The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 V Series supports premium display configurations, including:

    • Up to 4K resolution at 120Hz
    • QHD+ resolution at 240Hz
    • Dolby Vision
    • HDR10+ support

For memory and storage, the chipset supports:

    • Up to 24GB LPDDR5X RAM
    • UFS 4.1 storage

This allows smartphone manufacturers to create devices with fast application loading, smooth multitasking, and high-speed data access.

    Complete Flagship Feature Set

Although positioned below the standard Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, the V Series retains many premium features.

    Additional supported technologies include:

    • Snapdragon Lossless Spatial Audio
    • Quick Charge 5
    • Hardware security engine
    • Virtualization technology
    • C2PA content authentication

This ensures that devices powered by the new chipset can still offer a near-flagship experience beyond raw processing performance.

A Cost-Effective Alternative to the Full Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5

The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 V Series takes a different approach from traditional downgraded flagship chips. Qualcomm has reportedly preserved the CPU, cache, AI engine, connectivity, and multimedia capabilities, while only reducing GPU resources.

As a result, real-world performance is expected to remain close to the standard Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, especially in everyday usage scenarios. The slightly reduced GPU may mainly affect extremely demanding gaming workloads, while helping manufacturers achieve more competitive pricing.

For mid-range flagship smartphones launching in the second half of 2026, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 V Series could become one of the most attractive choices, delivering flagship-level features at a lower cost.
