Safest Storage Servers for Your Online Data

Brady CottonBy Brady CottonMay 17, 2022
Facebook Twitter Pinterest LinkedIn Tumblr Email

To effectively and safely store their data, most companies use NAS. NAS is one example of the application of existing technology in the company.

NAS itself stands for Network Attached Storage. This technology can be used for backups of the main server at a lower cost. Meanwhile, small companies that do not have a dedicated IT staff can easily be used as the central file server.

What is NAS? As a network technician who learned IT from scratch, don’t be ignorant even if you are self-taught. At least you know the physical form of storage devices that can connect to this network.

After that, know how to apply it even though a brief description. Moreover, this NAS technology can be used by home users as a multimedia center to enjoy entertainment content with family.

Therefore, the following article discusses the introduction of NAS Servers from various brands, which are summarized from multiple sources.

Various NAS Servers You Can Try

Please note that this article does not discuss the best NAS Server brands. This post is only an introduction to the various kinds of NAS servers. This introduction, hopefully, adds better insight. Here are some of them:

    1. Synology

Synology, Inc. is a technology company headquartered in Taiwan that is well known for specializing in NAS technology. Moreover, the founders, namely; Cheen Liao and Philip Wong, had worked for Microsoft before finally leaving.

The hardware type is the DiskStation model for the desktop version. FlashStation for flash versions and RackStation for Synology models are rack-mounted like typical server computers (not tower versions).

The operating system is called DSM, taken from Disk Station Manager. The operating system is built with the Linux kernel. The two founders of Synology started writing an operating system under the name Filer OS based on the OS Berkeley Software Distribution (BSD).

For beginners who are self-taught from scratch and don’t know what BSD is? This OS includes Unix-like, so it can be said that it is still a Linux family. It’s on a GNU/Linux basis which is equally Unix-like too.

Please remember that although the storage server providers promise safety and security, it’s always better to equip yourself with a decent amount of protection. With all the things around, there’s nothing to worry about. First, you can hide your IP address using PIA services, one of the best VPN providers in the market. See the explanation, and find out why it could be the best option for you.

    2. QNAP

Next, QNAP Systems, Inc; is a software development and hardware design company based in Taiwan and focused on NAS, DAS (Direct Attached Storage) and smart-video innovation.

QNAP stands for Quality Network Appliance Provider. Its products include switches, expansion cards (interface cards), storage accessories, computing accelerator cards, etc.

Because they both come from Taiwan, it’s natural for someone to say they are “brothers and sisters” when asking questions between QNAP and Synology. It’s the same with Infortrend and ASUSTOR, who come from Taiwan.

The type TS-451D2-4G is an excellent example of a QNAP product. This NAS server has an Intel® Celeron® J4025 dual-core 2.0 GHz (Burst up to 2.9 GHz) and 4 GB DDR4 memory (1 x 4 GB).

    3. Infortrend

There is also the Infortrend Technology, Inc. The company, headquartered in New Taipei, also specializes in NAS and SAN (Storage Area Networks). At first, it was focused on the RAID controller. But then it developed gradually into Network Attached Storage (NAS).

One of the products is the EonStor GSe Pro 100, equipped with Intel Atom 4-Core, DDR3 4GB (non-ECC), up to 16GB with options for RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 3, RAID 5, and RAID 6.

Like Synology, the Infortrend operating system is based on a web browser. Its name is EonOne.

    4. Asustor

Taking information from the asustor.com page, the company ASUSTOR, Inc. was founded in 2011 through direct investment from ASUSTeK Computer Inc. Its NAS product brand, ASUSTOR, comes from the words “ASUS” and “Storage”.

Meanwhile, products from AsusTek Computer Inc. are more familiar with the ASUSTeK or ASUS label, which of course, is widely known. These ASUS brand products can be found on laptops, desktop computers, cell phones, monitors, projectors, motherboards, optical storage, graphics cards and others.
