The TempoTec Sonata MHD MQA 8X Headphone Amplifier has a minimal design and footprint. Inside the package, there is also the adapter for connection to PC and laptop (Type-C-USB) while the Lightning for Apple devices must be purchased separately. Weighing just 13 grams.
Design
The TempoTec Sonata MHD body has become slightly smaller than the Sonata E44, volume control buttons moved to the left, with the central metal block is made from a single piece of sturdy aluminum. The volume control buttons from the front panel have moved to the side and now it is the usual system volume, and not its own internal volume, as was the case with all previous models. That is, a slight technical simplification is still present here.
Hardware
The DAC is recognized by the operating system even when the headphones are disconnected. Inside the TempoTec Sonata MHD, there is the ES9281 chip with an integrated amplifier, 8x MQA decoding support, and DSD 128, without additional functions. The physical volume buttons work on both Android and Windows 10, for the amplification part, you shouldn’t encounter any difficulties except for particularly demanding planar headphones. In fact, the Sonata MHD has slightly lower power than the E44, while still boasting the important MQA support and its own sonic signature.

Improvement in the bill of the device that catches the eye due to the absence of the two previous plastic inserts of which now only one remains. Two metal buttons, well separated, for volume control with thirty-step adjustment. Under the MQA logo there is an RGB LED thanks to which you can see at a glance what passes through the device, purple for the MQA format; dark green 88.2 to 192 kHz (PCM), DSD 64, light green 352.8 to 384 kHz (PCM), DSD 128, blue 32 to 48 KHz (PCM) while red indicates no playback in progress. The wiring would have deserved a further upgrade, even if more robust than in the past with protection in the terminal areas. Length from the Sonata to the terminal of 4.5cm, which drops 4cm on the opposite side towards the 3.5mm female jack.
