Intel will soon upgrade its Coffee Lake-S offering with the launch of new processors including a showcase, the Core i9-9900K. This chip will feature 8 physical cores and 16 logical cores. It will be launched on the occasion of the arrival of the Z390 chipset.
According to a new report, the name of the 8-core Coffee Lake-S processor is known. It will be called Core i9-9900K. Intel should use the term “Core i9” in the Mainstream segment after introducing it into its HEDT offer. This showcase will allow to oppose the recent Ryzen 7 2700X AMD. Intel also plans to launch new six-core references, all accompanied by a new platform based on the Z390 chipset.
Core i9-9900K, a new showcase
For the moment, three references are cited. We find the Core i9-9900K (8 cores / 16 Threads), Core i7-9700K (6 cores / 12Threads) and Core i5-9600K (6 cores / 6 Threads). On the aspect of the specifications, there is no other information.
It is interesting to note that if this report is accurate things will get more complex at Intel. If AMD has a clear “mainstream” offer with Ryzen 3, 5 and 7, Intel’s offer will offer Core i3, Core i5, Core i7 and Core i9. The latter is also available on the HEDT segment with different specifications such as the number of PCIe lines and a quad and non-dual channel controller. Added to this are questions about the compatibility of the current Z370 cards. Will they be able to exploit this Core i9-9900K. Nothing is certain. It is certain that Intel will launch a new chipset, the Z390.
There are discussions about it. The report sets out to announce a real novelty from burning at 14 nm (22 nm for the Z370 chipset). It is supposed to offer something to enrich future motherboards. It would be the Intel Wireless-AC 802.11 AC, Bluetooth 5.0 or 6 USB 3.1 Gen 2 ports.
On this point, recent revelations no longer agree. Intel would have production problems with lines in 14 nm unable to mass produce this Z390. Suddenly, the giant would have made the decision to rename under Z370 Z390 under the justification of some power changes for the 8C / 16T support. Once again, only the future can tell us what this processor will be worth and if it will be a serious candidate for an upgrade.
