Oneplus 8/8 Pro Officially Announced at 4,927 yuan ($699) to 7,042 yuan ($899)

Today, during a remote event, OnePlus officially took the wraps off its two newest smartphones, the OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro. The hotly anticipated devices introduce some brand new features to the OnePlus ecosystem while also subtly tweaking the aspects people already know and love.

However, the company also made some design decisions that fans of the OnePlus 7 series might not be too happy about, and the pricing for the highest-end OnePlus 8 Pro ascends into “normal” flagship territory, which will likely make long-time fans of the brand upset.

Let’s break down the core information you need to know about the OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro!

OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro: A new design

The OnePlus 7T and OnePlus 7T Pro from late last year looked very different from one another. This year, the OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro look very much alike, although the Pro is obviously bigger and with better specs.

With the OnePlus 8, the waterdrop notch of the OnePlus 7T is gone, with a left-aligned display cutout instead. The cutout is pretty small at 3.8mm, which is only slightly larger than the display cutouts on the Samsung Galaxy S20 series (which are 3.6mm). The response to the display cutout trend is about as divisive as the response to the notch trend, so you’ll need to decide if this is truly an upgrade.

On the back of the OnePlus 8, you’ll find a triple-lens camera, although not in the circular module we saw on the OnePlus 7T. Instead, the vertically oriented module from the OnePlus 7 Pro makes a return.

As far as the OnePlus 8 Pro goes, the design is pretty much the same as the OnePlus 8. The display is slightly bigger (6.78 inches vs. 6.55 inches) which makes the phone itself larger. Since the pop-up selfie cameras of the OnePlus 7 Pro and OnePlus 7T Pro are not present here, the device is also a little lighter — 199g as compared to the 206g of the 7T Pro. There’s also a fourth camera lens on the rear of the OnePlus 8 Pro.

Finally, the OnePlus 8 comes in some new colors (Onyx Black, Glacial Green, and Interstellar Glow) as does the OnePlus 8 Pro (Onyx Black, Glacial Green, and Ultramarine Blue). Keep in mind that certain colorways are locked to specific configurations. Additionally, some configs won’t be available in certain places around the world. Knowing OnePlus, a new colorway will likely launch a month or so from now, too.

    Specs and features

With both the OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro, the star spec upgrade is the inclusion of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 chipset combined with the X55 5G modem. This makes both devices 5G-capable. Some carrier-branded versions of the OnePlus 8 will support both mmWave and sub-600Hz 5G connections, but most models will only support sub-600Hz.

The OnePlus 8 Pro also gets two very notable upgrades for which OnePlus fans have been asking for years: wireless charging and an official IP68 rating against water and dust. The phone’s wireless charging speed is 30W, which is the same as its wired charging speed. However, to see those speeds you’ll need to buy the official Warp Charge 30 Wireless Charger for $69.95. You can still use your current charging docks and pads, but they won’t deliver that 30W speed.

The vanilla OnePlus 8 does not have wireless charging or an IP rating.

OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro price and availability

With every passing year, OnePlus phones have gotten more and more expensive. With those Snapdragon 865 processors included, it was inevitable that the OnePlus 8 series would be the most expensive phones in the company’s history.

Here’s how the pricing breaks down (note that OnePlus is tying color versions to memory configurations):

    OnePlus 8 Pro

    • $899 — OnePlus 8 Pro in Glacial Green (8GB RAM and 128GB storage)
    • $999 — OnePlus 8 Pro in Onyx Black or Ultramarine Blue (12GB RAM and 256GB storage)

    OnePlus 8

    • $699 — OnePlus 8 in Glacial Green (8GB RAM and 128GB storage)
    • $799 — OnePlus 8 in Interstellar Glow (12GB RAM and 256GB storage)

In the US, the OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro will be sold through OnePlus.com and Amazon, with availability from April 29. Pre-orders start today.
