Qualcomm revealed several of its upcoming chipsets targeting different market segments. So, in the first quarter of 2021, the company intends to bring to the market a new system-on-a-chip as part of the entry-level Qualcomm Snapdragon 4-series line, which will receive an integrated 5G modem.
Thus, smartphone manufacturers will be able to release affordable models with next-generation connectivity. Motorola, Oppo, and Xiaomi will be the first to use this chipset in their products and will start selling them in early 2021. Other manufacturers will join them later.
The Snapdragon 4-series processor will bring 5G connectivity to regions with an estimated 3.5 billion smartphone users. With the entry-level chipset, next-generation communications will be able to reach a wider audience, which will grow at a rapid pace. Qualcomm expects more than 750 million 5G smartphones to be sold in 2022, and in 2023 the volume of such devices will exceed 1 billion units. In comparison, it took 4G devices 2 years longer to break the 1 billion shipments milestone.
Laptops will also get 5G connectivity thanks to the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 8cx Gen 2 platform. This platform is designed to create laptops based on Windows 10. The chipmaker claims that the new Snapdragon 8cx Gen 2 platform with a TDP of 7W provides an increase of 18 % compared to the 10th Gen Intel Core i5 processor, which has twice the TDP (15W). At the same time, the performance indicator per watt of energy expended in the new product is up to 39% higher.
Thanks to the efficiency of the chip, laptops based on it can work without recharging for up to several days. For example, for the new model Acer Spin 7 with 5G connectivity, autonomy is declared up to 24 hours. In addition to 5G connectivity, the new platform also supports Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.1 (with aptX HD) for fast local connectivity.
The Qualcomm Snapdragon 8cx Gen 2 platform supports 4K displays and can output to two external 4K displays. Spectra ISP can capture images from 32MP cameras, can handle 4K HDR video. Additionally, Echo Cancellation and Noise Suppression (ENCS) technology is supported.
The new chipset is manufactured using a 7-nanometer process technology. It includes 8 Kryo 495 processing cores and an Adreno GPU with DirectX 12. The integrated X55 5G modem delivers a peak download speed of 7-Gbps and a maximum upload speed of 3-Gbps (in the mmWave range). The LTE modem provides download speeds of “only” up to 2-Gbps.
Qualcomm further added that more information about the Snapdragon 4-series 5G chipset will be unveiled later. Mind you! Devices based on this platform are expected to be commercially available in the first quarter of 2021.
