    An Overview of 10Gbase SFP+

Brady CottonBy Brady CottonFebruary 22, 2022

The transceiver modules tend to confuse many people who do not have in-depth knowledge in this domain. Numerous abbreviations bring about confusion. These abbreviations are an essential aspect used to highlight the characteristics of the modules.  The 10Gbase ER is among some of the standard transceiver modules we will evaluate

The 10GBase ER module, among others, uses 10 Gigabit Ethernet technologies for networking hence facilitating communication within Ethernet frames. The advancement of 10GBASE ER technology was first recognized in the year 2002 by IEEE 802 3ae standard. The abbreviation ER means standard reach; it implies long-range fiber variations. Among the critical specifications associated with 10Gbase ER is that it ranges up to 40 km when working over-engineered links. Further, it can reach speeds of up to 40 km when working over standard links. By using laser power, attention is essential for links that work below 20 km. The standards recognized by IEEE 802 3ae deal with 10Gbase Ethernet using fiber (10Gbase-LR. 10Gbase SR, AND 10Gbase LX410Gbase ER)

    Summary and Specifications of 10Gbase

    10 Base sr specifications

10 GBASE SR It exploits multi-mode fiber working with a wavelength of 850nm and covers a distance of 300m using QM3, and a distance of 400 m over OM4 fiber is possible. It makes use of 850 NM lasers. Further, it is the most commonly used multi-mode for optics specification because it was the original transceiver .10GBASE SR works by using the single solid-state lasers assemble that is cheaper. Further, it can be acquired cheaply compared to other existing optical modules that work on the 10GBE platform. Important to note is that the 10GBE is very sensitive depending on the fiber type used. It has an IEEE-defined physical coding Sub-layer 64/66B PCS. It can deliver data in serial code at the rate of 10.315 Gbit/S. The table below gives an overview of 10GBASE SR. The table below illustrates the 10Gbase SR max distance with modal bandwidth and core size.

    10 GBASE LR

The 10Gbase –LR works with single-mode fiber by using 1310 nm wavelength. It has a maximum distance of 10 km. In comparison, 10GBASE ER users operate on single-mode fiber by making use of 1550 NM wavelength.  Its maximum wavelength is 40 km, as mentioned earlier.  It can transmit data between two data centers on separate locations, any ISP, two distinct POP, or link up a service provider and a customer by using high speed ranging from 10Gbps to a distance of 20KM.

10GBASE –ER optical transceivers are present in the form of SFP+, X2 standards, XENPACK, and XFP. Many vendors produce the 10GBASE-ER transceivers since they are MSA compliant. The transceivers offer compatibility with different network equipment. 10GBASE ER is the only standard that can support up to 10Gbps of Ethernet connectivity covering distances greater than 20km. The only other transceiver capable of covering more considerable distances than this is the 10GBASE –ZR that can cover up to 80 km. However, it has a setback since 802AE does not cover it.

    10GBase ZR

The abbreviation 10g ZR also represents extended reach that can transmit up to 10Gbps data transmission rate using single-mode fiber. It uses 1550 nm lasers. Since it has a high power transmission rate, it requires increased attenuation when working with shorter links.  As pointed out earlier, the ZR format is not official since it is not a part of the 1EEE 802 3AE standards approved for networking hardware.  Before using ZR optics, it is essential to perform an optical power test. The power test is conducted on the fiber optic to facilitate error-free deployment. Different hardware manufacturers, including Cisco, possess their implementations of ZR but do not often offer cross-compatibility. Below is a summary of SFP modules’ abbreviations.
