In addition to Pixel 7, Google Pixel Watch, Pixel Buds Pro, and a Pixel Tablet teaser, Google I/O was an opportunity for Google to unveil its Pixel 6a. Let’s get straight to the heart of the matter with the expected features of the Google Pixel 6a.
First, we note that the design of the Pixel 6a is similar to its older brother. As in the Pixel 6, we find a largely uncluttered front screen, with a small hole at the top for the selfie camera, and thin bezels. At the back, the photographic module, with its dual-sensor, is located in a band that protrudes a few millimeters and extends from one side of the case to the other.
The phone is equipped with a 6.1″ OLED panel in FHD + against 6.4″ for its predecessor. Note that concessions have been made on the refresh rate, which drops from 90Hz to just 60Hz. The screen offers HDR compatibility, while it is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protective glass.
Under the hood, we obviously find the in-house Google Tensor processor, associated with the Titan M2 security chip. According to Google, the Pixel 6a will be five times faster than the Pixel 5a. The SoC can count on 6GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 128GB of internal memory in UFS 3.1.
In the photographic section, we see again another cut. The Google Pixel 6a has to make do with a 12.2MP main camera with Dual Pixel technology and a second 12MP Ultra Wide rear camera, which is the same setup seen on the Pixel 5 and Pixel 5a. The 50MP main camera is left for the top models, but Google Camera’s machine learning works its magic as its magic eraser, which makes it possible to remove unwanted people or objects from the photos so that they are perfect.
The front camera is 8MP like its older brothers. The Pixel 6a records videos up to 4K and 60fps on its rear camera and 1080p at 30fps on its front camera. The slow-motion recording is capable of recording at 240fps by reducing the resolution.
On the battery side, the manufacturer announces a capacity of 4410mAh, with fast charging technology (the power is not specified). Here again, the battery is less generous than on the Pixel 6, and it’s 4614mAh. Google promises autonomy of 24 hours at 100% and 72 hours in energy-saving mode.
Other features found in the Pixel 6a are stereo speakers, an under-display fingerprint reader, 5G connectivity, Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.2, and NFC. In this Pixel 6a, we lose the 3.5mm headphone jack, with this model we have to use USB-C headphones, Bluetooth headphones, or an adapter.
Google provides 5 years minimum of Android security updates while users could benefit from a protection system against phishing and malware.
Regarding the price of the different versions and the availability, it will be necessary to count on a price of 459€ and the pre-orders will be open from July 21, 2022. The new Google Pixel 6a is announced in three colors: sage, pebble, and charcoal.
