Xiaomi Mi 13 DXO Image Score: Is It Worth the Hype?

Last week, DXOMARK, the evaluation agency, announced the image score of Mi 13 Pro, which ranked 16th with 136 points. This announcement received mixed reactions from users, who felt the score did not accurately reflect the phone’s camera quality. After all, the Xiaomi Mi 13 Pro features two IMX989 one-inch sensors, currently the largest at the bottom, and an imaging system Leica supports.  Interestingly, the Xiaomi Mi 13 Pro score was the same as the previous super large cup Mi 12S Ultra generation, further fueling the user’s disagreement. However, DXO finally announced the image test results of the same generation standard version of Mi 13 on the evening of March 13, ranking 30th with a score of 130.

From a ranking perspective, the Mi 13 scored only 1 point higher than the Huawei P40 Pro released three years ago, and it is not as good as the iPhone 12 Pro. DXO acknowledges that the Mi 13 can take decent photos and videos in almost any condition thanks to its triple rear camera setup. The device offers a neutral white balance, good color representation, accurate exposure, and a balance between image detail and noise in photo mode.

In addition, the Mi 13 performs very well in terms of ultra-wide-angle and a telephoto zoom. The disadvantage is that in high-contrast scenes, the dynamic range of Mi 13 is not wide enough, leading to shadow and highlight clipping. Additionally, while the autofocus is accurate, it can be slow.

The video mode of the Xiaomi Mi 13 also has some issues, such as exposure instabilities, insufficient white balance, and autofocus instability in indoor and low-light environments. Despite these drawbacks, Mi 13 features three rear cameras that cover the optical zoom range of 0.6x-3.2x and support up to 30x digital zoom. Moreover, all the cameras have passed Leica’s visual certification.

The primary camera adopts the IMX 800 CMOS, with a size of 1/1.49 inches and 50 megapixels. The default four-in-one output generates 12.5 Megapixel photos. While the Mi 13 Pro may not have scored as high as some other phones, it still offers excellent photography capabilities, especially regarding zoom and ultra-wide-angle shots.

In conclusion, the Mi 13 Pro and standard version may not have scored as high as some of their competitors, but they still offer impressive photography capabilities. While there may be some issues with high-contrast scenes and video mode, the device provides neutral white balance, good color representation, accurate exposure, and a balance between image detail and noise in photo mode. Overall, the Mi 13 is a solid option for photography enthusiasts who want a device that can capture high-quality images and videos in most conditions.
