According to Lithuanian media lrytas.lt, on June 29, the Lithuanian government’s proposed amendment to the Law on the Control of Tobacco, Tobacco Products and Related Products was supported by 63 members of parliament, two opposed and five abstained, and is currently awaiting final approval.
The amendment seeks to ban flavored e-cigarette products and is scheduled to take effect on May 1 next year.
Ieva Kacinskait-Urbonien, a member of Parliament who disagreed with the amendment, argued that it was an inappropriate measure and that such bans do not solve children’s health problems.
Another lawmaker, Aurelijus Veryga, didn’t think so. He believes that manufacturers are well aware that flavoring additives in e-cigarettes will be attractive to consumers, and it is logical for the law to ban the addition of flavoring agents, which is also in line with EU law.
Councillor Vytautas Barkas expressed dissatisfaction with the effective date of the amendment, saying that the effective date should be brought forward to November 1 this year.
Antanas Matulas, chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Health Affairs, reminded everyone not to doubt any bad intentions of the amendment and confirmed that it is also possible for the amendment to enter into force early.
