Voopoo Drag X3 vs Drag X2: Hands-On Comparison Review

Habib QaziBy Habib QaziFebruary 2, 2026

After two successful years with Voopoo Drag X2, Voopoo has released its successor, the Voopoo Drag X3. Having used both devices extensively, I’m here to break down what’s changed, what’s stayed the same, and whether the upgrade is worth it.

The Voopoo Drag X series has been a fan favorite since its launch, offering reliable performance with Voopoo’s excellent PnP X coil system. Drag X3 builds on this foundation with several key improvements while maintaining the signature semi-tubular design and leather wrap that made the X2 popular.

Both devices are external battery pod mods aimed at DTL (Direct-To-Lung) vapers, but there are some significant differences worth exploring.

    Design & Build

    What’s Changed

The most noticeable upgrade is the display. The Drag X2’s basic screen has been replaced with a stunning 1.66-inch HD touch screen on the X3. This isn’t just bigger – it’s fully touch-activated, making navigation much more intuitive than the button-based system on the X2.

The battery system has seen a major overhaul. Gone is the old C-Frame battery cover from the X2. The Drag X3 now features a lockable, removable battery housing that accepts both 18650 and 21700 batteries (the X2 only took 18650s). The housing latches securely with magnets, making battery swaps quicker and more satisfying.

    What’s Stayed the Same

The iconic leather hide wrap around the sides and back remains, giving both devices that premium feel. The semi-tubular shape is unchanged, and both use zinc alloy construction. The overall footprint is similar, though the X3 is slightly taller at 99.2mm versus the X2’s dimensions.

Both devices still use the PnP X pod system with 5ml capacity (2ml TPD), top airflow, and side filling. The 510 magnetic connection and adjustable airflow ring work identically on both models.

    Features & Performance

    Power & Battery

    • Drag X2: 5-80W output, 18650 battery only
    • Drag X3: 5-80W output, 18650 OR 21700 battery

The wattage range is identical, but the X3’s 21700 compatibility means longer battery life if you choose the larger cell. Both charge via Type-C USB at 2A, taking roughly 70 minutes for a full charge.

    Chipset & Modes

Both run Voopoo’s Gene chipset with three modes:

    • SMART Mode: Auto-detects coil and sets optimal wattage
    • RBA Mode: Full manual wattage control
    • ECO Mode: Conserves battery power

The Voopoo Drag X3 adds three different display themes and animated graphics, which the X2 lacks. It’s purely cosmetic but adds a nice touch of personalization.

    Game-Changer

The X3 introduces Captive Touch Activation – a brilliant safety feature. The fire button only works when touched with your finger, not through fabric or when pressed in your pocket. This prevents accidental firing completely. The X2 has standard button locking, which requires manual activation.

Note: On the X3, this feature can’t be disabled and won’t work with gloves on.

    Display Comparison

    • Voopoo Drag X2: Basic 0.96-inch color screen
    • Voopoo Drag X3: 1.66-inch HD touch screen with clock function

The Voopoo X3’s larger display shows battery percentage, mode, wattage, coil resistance, puff counter, and vape time – all easier to read than the X2’s smaller screen. The touch navigation is significantly faster than cycling through menus with buttons.

    Coil Performance

Both devices use the same PnP X coils, which are among the best stock coils available. The X3 comes with 0.15Ω and 0.3Ω coils, while coil options remain compatible across both devices:

    • 0.15Ω (60-80W)
    • 0.2Ω, 0.3Ω, 0.45Ω, 0.6Ω, 0.8Ω, 1.0Ω

Flavor production, vapor output, and coil longevity are identical – both excellent. I consistently get 100ml+ from a single coil on either device.

    Real-World Usage

What I Prefer on the X3

    1. Touch screen navigation – So much faster than button pressing
    2. 21700 battery option – Noticeably longer battery life
    3. Better battery housing – More secure, easier to swap
    4. Captive Touch – Never worry about pocket firing
    5. Display themes – Nice personalization touch

What the X2 Still Does Well

    1. Slightly more compact without the larger battery housing
    2. No accidental touch screen activation – The X3’s screen is very sensitive
    3. Works with gloves – No Captive Touch to worry about
    4. Proven reliability – Two years on the market

    Verdict

    Should X2 Owners Upgrade?

If you’re happy with your Voopoo Drag X2, there’s no urgent need to upgrade. The core vaping experience – flavor, vapor, coil life – is identical. However, if you value convenience features, the X3’s touch screen, 21700 compatibility, and Captive Touch make it worth considering.

    Which Should New Buyers Choose?

For new buyers, the Drag X3 is the clear winner. At roughly the same price (£27-35), you get:

    • Better display and navigation
    • More battery options
    • Improved safety features
    • Modern design touches

The X2 might appeal if you prefer physical buttons, need glove-friendly operation, or find a great deal on remaining stock.

    Verdict

The Voopoo Drag X3 is what a sequel should be meaningful improvements without fixing what wasn’t broken. The PnP X coil system remains exceptional, the build quality is top-notch, and the new features genuinely enhance the user experience.

    Rating: 9/10

Best for: DTL vapers wanting a reliable, feature-rich pod mod with excellent flavor production and flexible battery options.

Whether you go Drag X2 or X3, you’re getting a solid device from Voopoo’s proven Drag lineup. VOOPOO Drag X3 just edges ahead with its thoughtful upgrades and future-proof design.
