Igeekphone News, July 18: Recently, Alex Turner, a former Google DeepMind artificial intelligence security researcher, publicly released a 10,000-word resignation letter, accusing Google of signing an unrestricted military artificial intelligence cooperation agreement with the Pentagon.
Turner has been conducting AI security research at DeepMind for over two years. In his article, he detailed how Google gradually compromised with the Pentagon and eventually signed this unrestricted military AI agreement.
The project that has sparked the greatest controversy is Project Nimbus. This agreement involves the use of Google’s AI technology for large-scale surveillance and autonomous weapon systems. There has long been concern that AI technology could thus be weaponized.
Turner criticized the top management of Google and several AI ethics leaders for failing to prevent this agreement. He argued that Google’s shift from “Don’t be evil” to a complete lack of ethical boundaries marks the substantive failure of the tech giant’s commitment to AI ethics.
Many technology companies have explicitly prohibited the use of AI for large-scale surveillance and lethal autonomous weapons.
