Xiaomi 18 Fold Brings New Camera Tricks, From a Large 4:3 Preview to PC-Class Editing

Xiaomi is continuing its countdown to the launch of the Xiaomi 18 Fold, and the company has now revealed several new imaging features designed specifically around the phone’s unusual foldable form factor.

The Xiaomi 18 Fold is scheduled to officially launch on September 7 at 7:00 PM. Rather than treating the foldable design simply as a way to provide a larger screen, Xiaomi is positioning the device as a different kind of photography and content-creation tool.

A 4:3 Viewfinder When the Phone Is Folded

One of the more interesting camera features appears when the Xiaomi 18 Fold is closed.

Xiaomi says the outer display can provide a large 4:3 viewfinder, giving the phone a shooting experience somewhat reminiscent of a traditional compact camera. The wider viewing area is intended to make framing easier while maintaining a familiar photography ratio.

When the phone is unfolded, the experience changes again. The outer screen can provide a real-time high-definition preview, allowing users to see the composition while taking photos and giving subjects a better idea of their posture and positioning.

This approach makes the foldable structure part of the camera experience rather than simply a hardware characteristic.

The Foldable Form Factor Also Targets Post-Production

Xiaomi is also highlighting what happens after a photo or video has been captured.

The company describes the Xiaomi 18 Fold as a potential professional creative platform, with support for software traditionally associated with PC-based workflows.

For users who frequently edit photos or other content, the large internal display could provide more working space than a conventional smartphone. Combined with the foldable design, this could make the device more suitable for editing and other productivity-oriented tasks while traveling.

    Leica Triple-Camera System

The Xiaomi 18 Fold will feature a Leica-branded triple-camera setup, with the company emphasizing the use of Leica optical Summilux lenses for a cleaner and more transparent image output.

The main camera is expected to use a 200MP sensor measuring 1/1.56 inches, giving the phone a high-resolution foundation for capturing fine details.

The telephoto camera will reportedly feature a 50MP periscope sensor with 3.5x optical zoom. This setup should offer more flexibility for photographing distant subjects while also being useful for portraits.

Completing the rear camera system is a 50MP ultrawide camera, designed to capture a broader field of view for landscapes, architecture and scenes where fitting more into the frame is important.

Xiaomi 18 Fold Specifications Revealed So Far

Based on Xiaomi’s latest announcements, the currently disclosed specifications and features include:

    • Processor: First-generation device to feature the Xuanjie O3 AI flagship SoC, with an AnTuTu score reportedly exceeding 5.22 million points
    • Form factor: New-style foldable design with a compact central-folding structure
    • Displays: Approximately √2:1 paper-like aspect ratio on both screens, with a 5.38-inch outer display and 7.58-inch inner display
    • Protection: Dual-layer UTG ultra-thin glass
    • Memory: First device to use Changxin LPDDR6 memory, with bandwidth reportedly reaching 113.8GB/s
    • Rear cameras: 200MP Leica main camera, 50MP Leica periscope telephoto with 3.5x optical zoom, and 50MP Leica ultrawide camera
    • Battery: 6,000mAh Xiaomi Jinshajiang battery with 20% high silicon content and an energy density of 920Wh/L
    • Charging: 67W wired fast charging and 50W wireless charging
    • Design: Narrow four-sided bezels, large rounded corners, runway-style camera decoration and a flat wrapped center frame
    • Hinge: New-generation Xiaomi Dragonbone hinge with a natural water-drop structure
    • Durability: Claimed 1.2-meter drop resistance, Xiaomi Dragon Crystal Glass 3.0 and a reinforced 7-series aluminum alloy frame
    • Software: Launches with Xiaomi HyperOS 4
    • AI feature: Supports the XiaoAI Inspiration Ball
    • Positioning: Described by Xiaomi as its highest-end smartphone to date
    • Color: New “Xiye Red” finish, alongside other expected color options

    A Foldable Designed Around Photography

Xiaomi 18 Fold’s camera strategy is notable because Xiaomi is not simply focusing on megapixel counts.

The company is using the two-screen design to create different shooting scenarios: the outer display works as a large 4:3 viewfinder, while the unfolded configuration provides a larger preview and potentially more room for post-production.

Combined with the Leica triple-camera system, 200MP main sensor, periscope telephoto and PC-class software support, Xiaomi appears to be targeting users who want a foldable phone that can function as both a photography device and a portable creative workstation.

With the official launch scheduled for September 7, Xiaomi is expected to reveal the remaining details, including pricing and availability, at the launch event.
