FMS FCX18 II Ford Bronco 2021 brings the iconic off-road SUV into the world of 1/18-scale radio-controlled vehicles. Rather than focusing purely on speed, this licensed RC crawler is designed for drivers who enjoy navigating rocky trails, climbing obstacles, exploring uneven terrain, and building realistic miniature off-road scenes.

Its combination of a detailed Ford Bronco body, four-wheel-drive system, two-speed transmission, low-center-of-gravity chassis, metal gears, and oil-filled shock absorbers gives it an interesting position in the small-scale crawler market.

For hobbyists looking for a compact RC vehicle with more than just an attractive appearance, the FCX18 II deserves a closer look.

    1. Ford Bronco Styling That Goes Beyond a Basic RC Body

One of the strongest selling points of the FCX18 II is its officially licensed 2021 Ford Bronco body. FMS has paid attention to the details that make the full-size SUV recognizable, instead of simply placing a generic truck shell on a crawler chassis.

The front end features the Bronco’s distinctive square grille, round headlights, and recognizable BRONCO lettering. Other exterior details include front and rear bumpers, side mirrors, door handles, windshield wipers, running boards, tow hooks, and a roof rack.

The rear-mounted spare tire also contributes to the realistic appearance. More importantly, it is designed as a functional spare rather than just a decorative accessory.

Inside, the molded cabin adds another layer of scale realism. This makes the vehicle appealing not only to people who enjoy driving RC crawlers but also to collectors who appreciate detailed miniature off-road vehicles.

FMS also uses officially licensed BFGoodrich KO3 tires and NOMAD wheels. These details give the model a more authentic appearance and help distinguish it from generic 1/18 RC trucks.

    2. FCX18 II LCG Chassis: Designed Around Stability

A realistic body is only part of the experience. For a rock crawler, chassis geometry and weight distribution have a much greater influence on how the vehicle behaves when the terrain becomes difficult.

The FCX18 II uses FMS’s second-generation low-center-of-gravity (LCG) chassis. For another example of a compact off-road platform, check out our PA14 RTR 1/16 4WD RC Rock Crawler review, which explores its metal chassis, proportional controls, and suspension design. Its motor and transmission layout is designed to keep the center of gravity low, helping reduce the tendency to roll when climbing uneven surfaces or driving across sloped terrain.

The 160mm wheelbase gives the Bronco a compact footprint. This is particularly useful when navigating narrow indoor obstacle courses, tight turns, and small outdoor trails where larger RC crawlers may struggle to find a suitable line.

The chassis also uses metal frame rails and suspension links, along with a solid-axle configuration. These components are important for maintaining durability and consistent wheel contact when the vehicle moves across rocks and irregular surfaces.

Another useful feature is the oil-filled shock absorber system. Compared with basic friction dampers, oil-filled shocks provide more controlled suspension movement, helping the vehicle maintain a more composed position when its wheels encounter obstacles.

The published ground clearance is approximately 31mm, while the approach and departure angles are listed at 54 and 46 degrees respectively. These figures give the small Bronco a useful foundation for tackling obstacles without immediately catching its bumpers.

    3. Two-Speed Transmission Makes a Real Difference

One feature that makes the FMS FCX18 II more versatile than a basic entry-level RC crawler is its mechanical two-speed transmission. FMS has also developed other compact crawling platforms, including the FMS FCX24 RTR RC crawler, which combines a two-speed transmission with a different chassis design for miniature off-road adventures.

Instead of relying on a single gear ratio for every driving situation, the vehicle provides separate high- and low-speed settings.

    • Low gear: Provides a slower, more controlled driving experience for technical climbing, rocky surfaces, and obstacles that require careful throttle input.

    • High gear: Allows the Bronco to move faster across relatively flat ground, dirt paths, and open trail sections.

The listed gear ratios are 94.2:1 in low gear and 17.2:1 in high gear. This substantial difference gives the driver two distinct driving characteristics.

For crawling enthusiasts, low-speed control is particularly important. A vehicle that moves too quickly can lose traction or become unstable when approaching a steep obstacle. The lower gearing helps make precise throttle adjustments easier.

When the trail opens up, switching to high gear makes the driving experience less restrictive.

This combination means the FCX18 II is not limited to extremely slow rock crawling. It can also serve as a compact trail vehicle for more relaxed outdoor driving.

    4. 4WD System and 180 Brushed Motor

Power comes from a 180-size brushed electric motor connected to a four-wheel-drive drivetrain. The electronic speed controller and receiver are integrated into a two-in-one unit, helping keep the electronics installation relatively straightforward.

The 4WD configuration is essential for a crawler of this type. By delivering power to all four wheels, the Bronco has more opportunities to maintain forward movement when one or more tires encounter loose gravel, rocks, or uneven ground.

It is also equipped with solid axles, which help provide predictable traction across irregular surfaces.

The brushed motor is a sensible choice for a scale-focused crawler. Rather than prioritizing extreme acceleration, the setup is intended to provide manageable power for controlled off-road driving.

According to the published specifications, the vehicle can reach a maximum speed of approximately 11km/h. That figure should be viewed in context: this is a crawler designed for obstacle control and trail driving, not a high-speed racing platform.

    5. Functional LED Lighting for Day and Night Driving

Lighting is another area where the FCX18 II adds more than decorative value.

The integrated LED lighting system features multiple lighting functions, including headlights, taillights, and other driving-related light effects. Depending on the selected lighting mode and configuration, the system can provide a more realistic appearance during operation.

This is especially attractive for drivers who enjoy taking photographs or recording videos of their RC vehicles on miniature trails.

The magnetic quick-release body mounting system is also worth mentioning. Instead of dealing with traditional body clips every time the shell needs to be removed, the FCX18 II uses magnetic mounting for convenient access.

The system also incorporates magnetic electrical contacts, allowing the lighting connections to work without repeatedly handling separate wiring connectors.

This makes routine battery changes and basic maintenance more convenient.

    6. Battery Life, Radio Control, and Driving Experience

The FCX18 II comes with a 7.4V 900mAh 2S LiPo battery and a USB charging cable.

Its advertised operating time varies depending on the selected gear and driving conditions:

    Specification Details
    Battery 7.4V 900mAh 2S LiPo
    Charging time Approximately 1 hour
    Low-speed runtime 40–60 minutes
    High-speed runtime 15–20 minutes
    Radio frequency 2.4GHz
    Transmitter FS-MG44
    Control channels 4CH
    Control distance Approximately 80m
    Maximum speed Approximately 11km/h

The difference between high- and low-speed runtime is worth considering. Drivers who spend most of their time crawling slowly may get considerably more driving time from a single charge than those who frequently use high gear.

The 2.4GHz radio system helps provide stable control and allows multiple compatible RC vehicles to operate without relying on the same fixed frequency channel.

One small detail to remember is that the transmitter requires four AAA batteries, which are not included in the package.

    7. What Comes in the Box?

The FMS FCX18 II is supplied as a Ready-to-Run (RTR) package, so buyers do not need to assemble a complete RC vehicle from individual components before getting started.

    The package includes:

    • 1 × FMS FCX18 II Ford Bronco 2021 RC crawler

    • 1 × 2.4GHz transmitter and installed receiver

    • 1 × 7.4V 900mAh 2S LiPo battery

    • 1 × USB battery charger

    • 1 × Decal sheet

    • 1 × User manual

The included battery and transmitter make it a convenient starting point for beginners. However, remember to purchase four AAA batteries for the remote controller separately.

    9. Who Should Consider the FCX18 II Ford Bronco?

The FMS FCX18 II is aimed at a fairly specific group of RC enthusiasts.

Miniature rock crawling enthusiasts: The LCG chassis, four-wheel drive, solid axles, and two-speed transmission make it suitable for people who enjoy technical driving rather than simply racing around.

Ford Bronco fans: The officially licensed body, detailed interior, BFGoodrich tires, NOMAD wheels, and functional spare tire give collectors plenty to appreciate.

Indoor RC hobbyists: Its 1/18 scale is convenient for building small obstacle courses at home. A tabletop rock garden or miniature trail can provide plenty of driving challenges.

Outdoor trail drivers: The compact dimensions make it easy to carry on camping trips or outdoor excursions. It can tackle appropriately scaled dirt trails, rocks, and other uneven surfaces.

Beginners interested in crawling: The RTR configuration reduces the initial setup requirements. However, beginners should still learn basic LiPo battery handling and crawler maintenance before regular use.

    10. Is the FMS FCX18 II Ford Bronco Worth Buying?

FMS FCX18 II Ford Bronco 2021 stands out because it combines scale-model presentation with practical crawling hardware.

Its appeal is not based on one headline specification. Instead, the vehicle brings together several useful features: a licensed hard-shell Bronco body, a 160mm LCG chassis, a two-speed mechanical gearbox, metal drivetrain components, oil-filled shocks, functional lighting, and a magnetic body mounting system.

The two-speed transmission is particularly valuable because it gives drivers more flexibility than a conventional single-speed mini crawler. Low gear supports controlled obstacle climbing, while high gear makes it easier to cover open ground.

There are also a few limitations worth considering. The 180 brushed motor is not intended for high-speed performance, and battery life can fall considerably when driving in high gear. Its 1/18 scale also means that obstacle size matters: extremely large rocks and deep ruts may be unsuitable.

Nevertheless, if your priority is realistic off-road driving, detailed styling, and a capable compact crawler platform, the FCX18 II is an interesting option.
