Apple M2 Max Chip: 3nm Performance Monster Coming

At this week’s WWDC, Apple announced the M2 chip, which will power the new MacBook Air and 13-inch MacBook Pro.

However, although the M2 has powerful performance, it is still TSMC’s 5nm (second generation), which proves that Apple’s design and development of the M2 are very early, and on the other hand, it also provides a foreshadowing for the future upgrade and iteration of the M2.

A senior analyst, Jeff Pu, said that Apple will launch the M2 Pro processor by the end of the year, upgrading to TSMC’s 3nm process. The CPU core of the M2 Pro will be increased to 12 cores and the GPU will be more powerful.

The current M2 is designed to have a maximum 8-core CPU + 10-core GPU, with an 18% increase in CPU performance and a 35% increase in GPU performance.

The M2 Pro is expected to be used on the new Mac mini and 14-inch MacBook Pro. As for the M2 Max, the maximum 12-core CPU + 38-core GPU is expected to be used on the Mac Pro.

What’s interesting is that yesterday, the mobile phone chip experts in the industry also sneaked away from the M3 chip. The same 3nm process, code-named Palma, will only be taped out in the third quarter of next year.
