DeepSeek Reportedly Developing Custom AI Inference Chip to Reduce Dependence on NVIDIA

Brady CottonBy Brady CottonJuly 8, 2026
Facebook Twitter Pinterest LinkedIn Tumblr Email

Igeekphone News: Chinese artificial intelligence startup DeepSeek is reportedly developing its own AI chip, signaling a strategic move to strengthen its computing infrastructure and reduce reliance on third-party hardware suppliers such as NVIDIA.

According to recent reports from overseas media, the company’s custom silicon project is focused primarily on AI inference rather than the computationally intensive process of training large language models.

Custom Chip Said to Focus on AI Inference

Sources familiar with the project claim that DeepSeek’s in-house chip is being designed specifically for inference—the stage at which trained AI models generate responses for end users.

Inference has become an increasingly important area of AI infrastructure as the widespread adoption of generative AI services has significantly increased demand for efficient, high-performance computing.

By developing specialized inference hardware, companies can potentially lower operating costs, improve energy efficiency, and optimize performance for their own AI models.

Project Reportedly Underway for About a Year

According to the report, DeepSeek began work on the custom chip approximately one year ago.

The company is also said to have initiated discussions with multiple external partners, including firms specializing in:

    • Chip design
    • Semiconductor manufacturing
    • Memory technologies

Rather than building every component independently, DeepSeek is reportedly pursuing a collaborative development model, a strategy increasingly adopted across the global AI industry.

    No Official Confirmation Yet

Following the publication of the report, Chinese technology media outlet Sina Technology sought confirmation from DeepSeek.

As of the time of writing, the company had not issued an official statement regarding the reported chip project.

When asked through DeepSeek’s own AI assistant about the report, the model responded:

“Thank you for your attention. Regarding the Bloomberg report, we currently have no more information to disclose.”

While the response neither confirmed nor denied the report, it suggests the company is not prepared to comment publicly on the matter.

    Continued Focus on AI Efficiency

The AI assistant also reiterated one of DeepSeek’s long-standing priorities:

“As an AI company, DeepSeek has always been committed to research and innovation in model algorithms. At the same time, we continue to explore better engineering solutions to reduce inference costs and improve service efficiency.”

Although this statement does not directly confirm custom chip development, it aligns with the industry’s growing emphasis on optimizing AI infrastructure alongside model innovation.

    Why Inference Chips Matter

As generative AI adoption accelerates, inference has become one of the largest operational expenses for AI service providers.

Unlike model training, which is performed periodically using massive computing clusters, inference must occur continuously every time users interact with AI systems.

Purpose-built inference chips can offer several advantages, including:

    • Lower operating costs
    • Reduced energy consumption
    • Faster response times
    • Improved scalability for AI services
    • Less dependence on third-party GPU suppliers

These benefits have prompted many leading AI companies to invest in custom hardware tailored to their own workloads.

    A Broader Industry Trend

DeepSeek’s reported initiative reflects a wider shift across the AI industry.

Major technology companies including Google, Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, and OpenAI have all invested heavily in custom AI accelerators or AI-specific silicon to complement—or reduce reliance on—general-purpose GPUs.

For Chinese AI developers, the trend has become even more significant amid ongoing export restrictions affecting access to some of the world’s most advanced AI chips.

Developing customized inference hardware could help companies improve long-term competitiveness while strengthening supply chain resilience.

    Looking Ahead

At this stage, reports indicate that DeepSeek’s AI chip project remains under development, and the company has yet to officially confirm its existence.

If the project proceeds as reported, DeepSeek would join a growing group of AI companies developing specialized hardware to support increasingly demanding AI workloads. As competition in artificial intelligence expands beyond software into computing infrastructure, custom AI chips are expected to play an increasingly important role in improving performance, reducing costs, and supporting the next generation of AI services.
