DJI CrystalSky Monitor for Phantom 3 / 4 Inspire 1 / 2 Mavic Pro Spark OSMO Review (Coupon Inside)

DJI Phantom 4 Professional and DJI Inspire 2 release the new Crystalsky monitor. This is an FPV screen, which is compatible with numerous DJI multicopters. Thanks to the built-in DJI GO-app, numerous ports, and extremely low latency, the DJI Crystalsky Monitor is an alternative to the traditional smartphone – and is particularly suitable for professional users.

    Design

The DJI Crystalsky Monitor is available in two different sizes and is compatible with the DJI Phantom series, the DJI Inspire 1 series, the DJI Mavic Pro and DJI Matrice models. On the one hand, DJI offers a 5.5-inch version with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels, on the other hand, a 7.85-inch version with a resolution of 2048 x 1536 pixels is available. The latter is also available in two different brightness variants – each with 1,000 cd / m² or 2,000 cd / m².

    • 5.5 inch: resolution 1920 x 1080 pixels, brightness 1000 cd / m²
    • 7.85 inch: resolution: 2048 x 1536 pixels, brightness: 1000 cd / m²
    • 7.85 inches: resolution: 2048 x 1536 pixels, brightness 2,000 cd / m²

The luminance or luminous intensity is measured with the unit “cd / m2” – candelas per square meter. The brightness of a luminous surface – such as the display of a monitor, for example – is meant as a matter of course. Candela (Latin for candle ) is the SI basic unit of light intensity. In the development of the DJI Crystalsky monitor, DJI Innovations placed particular emphasis on high display brightness so that the FPV image and telemetry data are clearly visible when used outdoors in bright environments. Both variants are available with an enormous brightness compared to conventional smartphones and other mobile devices, which should be particularly noticeable in bright environments, such as direct sunlight. For example, the 5.5-inch version has a luminance of 1,000 candela per square meter (cd / m²) while the 7.85-inch monitor has a maximum luminance of 2,000 candelas per square meter (cd / m²). For comparison: Conventional notebooks – ie PCs, which are also used outdoors – should ideally have a luminance of 140 cd / m². The current Apple iPhone 7, however, has a brightness of 625 cd / m².

FPV Screen as an Alternative to the Mobile Device

Even with the DJI Phantom Vision models, DJI Innovations used the pilot’s mobile device to display, for example, telemetry data or FPV images in the context of the multicopter flight. Recently, DJI introduced the DJI GO app- an application for Android and iOS devices, which serves as a ground station, so to speak. For professional users, this solution did not always prove to be a good thing: especially when it comes to commercial production of aerial photographs, the customers looked quite suspicious when the aerial photographer grabbed a conventional Android or iOS device from his pockets. Remote controls with the integrated display – as offered by Yuneec with the Typhoon H hexakopter or the ST16 remote control – made a much more professional impression. DJI now offers its own FPV display with the Crystalsky screen , which not only creates a more professional impression, but also thanks to its numerous features perfectly fits into the DJI ecosystem and makes the production of aerial photographs even more comfortable. The DJI CrystalSky-Monitor can be put into operation with the DJI Inspire 2, the DJI Inspire 1, the DJI Phantom 3 Professional / Advanced as well as the DJI Mavic Pro and the DJI Matrice M600 . With the DJI Phantom 3 4K and DJI Phantom 3 Standard , WiFi is used to connect to the display.

    Features

The DJI Crystalsky Monitor has a firmly embedded DJI GO app. Unnecessary Android apps, Android services, and Co. are no longer required. This makes the Crystalsky Monitor not only powerful, but also resistant to viruses, malware and other junk software. The permanently installed DJI GO app – like the mobile apps for Android or iOS – offers full access to telemetry data and flight parameters, camera control, photo and video material or FPV picture. In addition, the monitor is distinguished from conventional smartphones by a latency of – 180 m / s instead of an average of 220 m / s DJI Innovations.

The Crystalsky monitor has an exchangeable, external 4.920 mAh battery , which allows a working time of four to five hours (7.85 inches) or five to six hours (5.5 inches) depending on the selected display size. In addition, the display has a further – integrated – battery with a capacity of 980 mAh .

In addition, the display is equipped with a dual SD card slot , which can be used in combination with corresponding SD cards ( here information about memory cards ) both for the direct recording of photo and video material as well as a conventional data memory. In addition, the FPV display supports both the H.264 video codec and the H.265 video codec so that 4K material can be selected at up to 30 frames per second (H.264) or 60 frames per second (H. 265) can be recorded. The video material can also be output via HDMI output on other devices, such as larger screens.

    Conclusion

Speaking of the fact, the FPV display has numerous connections and ports to connect not only additional screens – for example, the DJI Goggle . A microUSB connector fits into the numerous connectivity options as well as a USB type C connector. An integrated, dual WiFi module is also on board, so that the display with a 4G dongle can be put into operation.
