Powerful noble detachable or compact everyday helper? With the Microsoft Surface Book 3 and the Surface Go 2, Microsoft is launching two new 2-in-1 devices that can be used as laptops and tablets. Both shine with the high-quality exterior and impeccable workmanship familiar to their predecessors, but they also have a few weaknesses.
Design

Display
Instead of a 16:9 screen like most laptops have, the Microsoft Surface Book 3 has a 3:2 screen. That means it’s a bit higher than most screens, which is useful when you’re working with documents or visiting web pages, for example. If you want to put two windows next to each other, it is less convenient: then the windows will become very narrow. However, for most productivity tasks, the high screen is useful and we like that. The 13.5-inch variant we tested has a touchscreen with a resolution of 3000×2000 pixels, the 15-inch variant has a resolution of 3240×2160 pixels. That equates to a pixel density of 267ppi in the small version and 260ppi in the large version. The screens are touch-sensitive by default and offer support for the Surface Pen.
Hardware
So, when testing Surface Book 3, could I use the previous generation and not notice the difference? Not. Indeed, the layout and port capabilities have not changed, but inside there was a 10th generation Intel Core i5 (or Core i7) processor (Ice lake family), up to 32 GB of RAM, and the NVIDIA GeForce graphics chip GTX 1660 Ti Max-Q. In this configuration, we have the power that the second generation of Surface Book might lack, so if you intend (and should) use it for the production of audio and video materials, photo processing, or gaming, you will not have to worry about its performance anymore.
Connectivity
A single USB-C port isn’t enough on a 15-inch laptop designed for content creators.” This is the observation made by Laptopmag shared by all the testers, even if some are less clear-cut. The two USB 3.1 Type-A ports (standard format) are on the one hand considered old-fashioned but on the other considered precious to avoid using the adapter. Opposite, a single USB Type-C port (Gen2, 10 Gbits/s)which supports video streaming (DisplayPort 1.4) and can be used to slowly charge the Book 3.
Other Features
Above the screen is a 5-megapixel front camera with two microphones. This area also houses the Windows Hello infrared facial recognition system, like all other Surface PCs. All variants support WiFi 6, and Bluetooth 5.0 and come with Windows 10 Home. The front camera has a resolution of 5 megapixels and supports FHD video conferences. On the back, there is a camera with 8 megapixels. With the IR sensor on the front, the device can be unlocked with your face via Windows Hello. On the sides of the screen, the manufacturer has placed two Dolby Atmos studio speakers, directed to the front to improve the sound experience while listening to music or watching movies.
