Qualcomm has officially introduced its new mobile chip called Atheros WCN3998. Its most interesting feature is support for the ultra-fast Wi-Fi 802.11ax standard, as well as the WPA3 security protocol. The combination between these 2 features is unique and is not found in any other product on the market. Qualcomm said they were the first company to offer their customers the ability to integrate Wi-Fi 802.11ax into their future products.
The new version of the technology offers not only higher speeds but also consumes less energy. Interestingly, besides the above-mentioned features, the Atheros WCN3998 also supports Bluetooth 5.1. Thus, Qualcomm offers manufacturers a comprehensive solution that is based on state-of-the-art wireless communication technologies. The company’s tests show that Wi-Fi 802.11ax consumes 67% less power than its predecessor Wi-Fi 802.11ac.
According to the IEEE roadmap, 802.11ax is the 6th generation of Wi-Fi standard after 802.11ac. For the first time, the integration of 2.4GHz and 5GHz is achieved. The maximum speed of 5GHz is 4.8Gbps. Qualcomm also emphasizes that with the new OFDMA (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access) and MU-MIMO (Multi-User Input Output), 802.11ax will greatly enhance the stability and number threshold for multi-device coexistence.
The company has also developed a special audio chip that is intended for the new generation of headphones of manufacturers. Thanks to it, users can expect maximum audio quality and long battery life. This module is called QCC5100 and we will soon see the first devices with it on the market. Qualcomm‘s new products are a surety guarantee that the company will continue to be a global leader in the field of innovation in the technology industry. The first smartphones with these chips will be available by the end of 2018. Not surprisingly, WCN3998 is expected to be integrated with the Snapdragon 855, 7nm technology, as well as up to 2Gbps X24 LTE baseband.
