It is reported that the Snapdragon 8 Elite 2 (model SM8850) to be released by Qualcomm in September this year is manufactured by TSMC and uses TSMC’s 3nm process technology. This is the main supply version of Qualcomm, and all the iterative flagship models to be released by the manufacturer will also adopt this version.
Next year, Qualcomm will also launch the Snapdragon 8 Elite 2s, which will be the first to adopt Samsung’s 2nm process technology. Given Samsung’s past failures, although the kit price is low, the manufacturer is still in the observation stage.
Previously, Samsung produced chips such as the Snapdragon 8 Gen1 and Snapdragon 888, which were widely questioned by the industry due to their overheating issues. Particularly, the Snapdragon 888 was tested by a blogger. After running the same game, the average power consumption of the two TSMC 5nm chips, Kirin 9000 and Apple A14, was 2.9W and 2.4W respectively. The Snapdragon 888, which adopts Samsung’s 5nm process, has a power of 4.0W.
Due to Samsung’s manufacturing process issues, Qualcomm turned to TSMC starting from the Snapdragon 8+ Gen1. The flagship platforms such as the Snapdragon 8+ Gen1, Snapdragon 8 Gen2, Snapdragon 8 Gen3, and Snapdragon 8 Elite are all manufactured by TSMC, and they have performed well in the market.
