Compared to the XDA Developers portal, the group has promised to supply the device, which costs $1400, with Android updates over a period of three years. This means that the duo should not only receive the update to Android 11 in the fall but also versions 12 and 13.
The model of Microsoft’s update strategy is Android developer Google, who has been supplying its Pixel smartphones with Android updates over this period since 2017. Even the Pixel 4a, which costs $402, will receive an update until 2023.
Meanwhile, it is unclear how often Microsoft will deliver the monthly security updates issued by Google. What is certain is that they have to be made available every quarter in the first year, as it is a requirement on the part of Google. Google and Samsung are meanwhile delivering these patches every month.
Surface Duo comes with an unlockable bootloader
In addition, Microsoft has confirmed to XDA Developers that the Surface Duo will have an unlockable bootloader. The device should therefore also be of interest to hobbyists, as it will not be a problem to root it or install a custom ROM.
The target group for the Surface Duo is not so many hobbyists, but rather business people who want to use productive apps and Microsoft 365 on it. A “full Windows 10 experience” should also be offered on the Duo, which is implemented via a virtual desktop.
