A clean vape is a happy vape. Regular maintenance of your tank, coils, and cartridges is essential for preserving flavor, ensuring smooth vapor production, and extending the life of your equipment. Residual e-liquid, known as “coil gunk,” can lead to burnt, unpleasant hits and can even be a breeding ground for bacteria.

Learning how to clean your gear properly is a simple process that will save you money and elevate your vaping experience. Here’s your step-by-step guide.

Why You Should Clean Your Vape Components

Flavor Purity: The number one reason. Old, stale e-liquid residue will muddle the taste of your new flavor.
Performance: Clogged coils and airways restrict vapor production and can cause weak draws.
Longevity: Regular cleaning prevents permanent buildup that can degrade components, making your coils and tanks last longer.

Part 1: How to Clean Your Vape Tank/Pod

This process is for the tank itself (the glass, metal, and plastic parts that hold the e-liquid), not the coil.

What You’ll Need:

Warm water
Mild dish soap (optional)
A clean bowl or basin
Paper towels or a clean, lint-free cloth
A soft toothbrush (optional)

Step-by-Step Process:

Disassemble Fully: Separate every part of your tank: the drip tip, top cap, glass tube, and base. Remove the coil and set it aside. Never submerge a coil with its cotton wicking in water (see coil section below).
Initial Rinse: Rinse all the components under warm (not hot) running water to wash away any loose e-liquid residue.
Soak (For Stubborn Residue): For tougher, sticky residue, fill a bowl with warm water and add a drop of mild dish soap. Soak the disassembled tank parts for 15-30 minutes. Avoid soaking any components with O-rings or seals for extended periods, as soap can degrade them. Alternatively, you can use pure isopropyl alcohol for a deeper soak, but be sure to rinse thoroughly afterward.
Scrub Gently: Use a soft toothbrush to gently scrub the threading, airflow holes, and other hard-to-reach areas. This dislodges any stubborn gunk.
Rinse Thoroughly: This is the most important step. Rinse every component extremely thoroughly with warm water until all traces of soap or alcohol are completely gone. Any leftover residue will create terrible flavors when you vape.
Dry Completely: Pat the parts dry with a paper towel and then let them air dry on a clean towel for at least an hour, ensuring all moisture, especially in the threading and airflow holes, has evaporated. Do not reassemble a wet tank.

Part 2: How to Clean Vape Coils

A Critical Warning: You cannot truly “clean” a disposable coil with an internal cotton wick. Once the cotton is burnt or heavily gunked up with sweetened e-liquid, it cannot be fully restored. However, you can extend its life and refresh it between similar flavors with a simple method.

The “Dry Burn” Method (For Rebuildable Coils Only):
This is only for RDA/RTA users who build with bare wire and cotton. Never dry burn a pre-made coil with cotton inside it; you will burn the wick.

Remove the old cotton.
Rinse the bare coil under water.
Pulse fire the mod at a low wattage until the coil glows red hot. This burns off the gunk.
Let it cool, rinse again to wash away the ash, and then re-wick with fresh cotton.

The “Soak & Dry” Method (For Pre-Made Coils):
This can help with mild gunk but is not a miracle cure.

Remove the coil from the tank.
Soak it in a small bowl of pure grain alcohol (like vodka) or isopropyl alcohol (90%+) for 10-15 minutes. Never use soap or water for this.
Remove it and let it air dry completely for at least 24 hours, preferably 48 hours. This is crucial to ensure all alcohol and moisture evaporate.
Once bone-dry, reprime the coil with a few drops of e-liquid and reinstall it.

Note: This method has mixed results. If the coil already tastes burnt, cleaning will not fix it. Replacement is the only option.

Cartridges, especially for oils and concentrates, are typically disposable. However, if a cartridge is clogged or you’re trying to refill a reusable one, you can try to clear it.

For Clogs:
