The Chinese company DJI presented a set of the drone with the possibility of observation from the first person (FPV) using a virtual reality helmet. It is called Digital FPV System. With this DJI wants to compete with popular brands such as FatShark.
DJI recently unveiled their latest toys for future drone racers: the DJI Digital FPV system. With this system, DJI wants to compete with brands such as FatShark to capture the hearts of droner racers. It consists of racing glasses, camera, air unit, and remote control. The sharp HD images and low latency, in particular, make an impression.
The latest FPV racing glasses from DJI are much smaller and lighter than its predecessors. The popular FatShark glasses remain smaller, but DJI is finally getting closer. With 720p HD video images and an image refresh of 120 frames per second, the glasses are extremely suitable for droner racing. In addition, DJI promises a low latency of just 28 milliseconds
The DJI FPV camera has a 150-degree ultra-wide-angle lens and records video in 1080p with 60 fps or 720p with 120 fps. The camera is equipped with a 1 / 3.2 ″ CMOS sensor. The camera and housing are very small and can easily be mounted on smaller drones.
DJI offers three different modes with the camera. The Race mode gives colors extra saturation so that obstacles really stand out. LED mode also increases saturation, but also adds noise control so that pilots can control their drones in dark environments. Finally, there is the Standard mode. This focuses on reducing color loss and maintaining details.
The DJI FPV air unit is mounted on the drone and can simultaneously receive input from the DJI Remote and provides HD video feedback with low latency to the DJI FPV glasses. The DJI Remote is a controller specially made for FPV racing and is reminiscent in appearance of the controllers of the DJI Phantom and Inspire drones. This uses a 5.8 GHz frequency channel to communicate with the DJI FPV air unit.
The DJI FPV system is now available for purchase and available in the DJI Store and it will be released in mid-August in two variants. The package with a transmitter, camera, and headset currently cost $971. Who wants to have a remote control, pays $1104. Theoretically, the FPV system can already be pre-ordered, but both variants are currently sold out in the German online shop.
