    Is ProXPN Safe?

Brady CottonBy Brady CottonNovember 23, 2019
Facebook Twitter Pinterest LinkedIn Tumblr Email

ProXPN has offered VPN services since 2009. ProXPN means protecting its customers from third parties who want to monitor and use their data for harmful purposes, such as ISPs, hackers and even governmental agencies.

Sites such as vpnAlert mention that ProXPN offers security protection of users’ online data, protecting their internet connections, masking their physical IP addresses and eliminating geo-blocking obstacles to their online sessions.

This article will cover ProXPN’s features so that you can decide if ProXPN is the best, safest choice for your online privacy and data security needs.

    Platforms Supported by ProXPN

ProXPN works well with Windows PCs and macOS. While it has good functionality with Android and iOS devices, it only has customized apps for Windows and macOS devices. ProXPN does not have compatibility with DD-WRT routers, Tomato routers or Linux devices. ProXPN falls a little short here, as there are VPN providers who have dedicated apps for tablets, smartphones, Linux and other devices outside of Windows and Apple products.

    Multiple Connections

You cannot use ProXPN’s servers to mask the online sessions of two or more devices while on the same ProXPN account. Many other VPN providers offer five or more simultaneous protected connections of a user’s PC, tablet, phone and other devices.

    Intuitive Setup and Use

Users will sign up for ProXPN’s service and create their accounts using a valid email address. After downloading and installing the client, you can run the app and login with your ProXPN account information.

The interface has four, helpful tabs: “General,” “VPN Guard,” “Location” and “Log.” The General tab is the part of the interface where you connect and disconnect from ProXPN’s servers. You can also pick your server location and protocol at this tab. The VPN Guard tab is you would activate the service’s kill switch. The Location tab virtually informs you where you are currently located on the map, which varies with the ProXPN server that you choose to use. The Log tab permits the user to check information about their session.

    P2P Support

ProXPN supports Peer-to-Peer (P2P) activities. Users who pay for ProXPN’s services can use their servers to torrent files. However, there are not many servers (only 18 in 13 countries), especially P2P servers. With this limited support for P2P, it will mean that the few servers that support it will be over-crowded, slowing down the overall performance of torrenting activities.

    ProXPN Encryption and Protocol

ProXPN’s supported protocols are few: only PPTP, IPSec and OpenVPN are supported. OpenVPN is the most favored of all available protocols, and ProXPN supports OpenVPN even on its basic, free plan.

When it comes to encryption, ProXPN works with OpenVPN to provide 2,048-bit key encryption, which enables a 512-bit tunnel. This encryption falls short of the highest, industry-standard available, the 256-bit Advanced Encryption Standard (AES), a military-grade standard proven to be “unhackable.” This vulnerability is a major security concern for any ProXPN user.

    Kill Switch

ProXPN has a “VPN Guard” feature that acts as a kill switch, ensuring that your connection is protected at all times while using ProXPN’s services. You can select what applications will automatically turn off and close whenever the ProXPN connection drops off, for whatever reason. This kill switch function is only available to paid users of ProXPN.

    Protection from Leaked Data

ProXPN provides its users with multiple forms of protection from leaked data. This includes protection from IPv6 leaks, DNS leaks and WebRTC leaks. Any successful leaks from these sources would expose your real IP address and likely any websites that you’ve visited during your online session.

    Log Policy

ProXPN claims that it has a “no-logging” policy, meaning that they do not keep track of its users’ online activities. ProXPN’s short privacy policy notes that it does not track online activity, originating IP addresses or connection periods. This service also has no data caps on any of its plans, which are a key reason why some VPN providers secretly do log their users’ activities and connection times.

Their policy states that they do keep track of signup information such as email addresses and passwords as well as payment information such as names and billing details. These kinds of data collection are standard among VPN providers, so they are no reason to be worried about ProXPN.

ProXPN does not lead the pack when it comes to VPN-connected internet speeds. But it is also far from the slowest VPN provider. Generally, if you connect to ProXPN’s servers, your internet will drop by about 42%/58% in terms of download/upload speeds. This is slightly above the VPN industry standard for VPN-enabled internet speeds and should be fast enough to do any kind of internet activity you would like to do.
