Samsung, Huawei, Xiaomi, and other companies are launching or preparing to release foldable smartphones. But TCL has something completely different to offer. Rollable screens are nothing new, after all, LG has already released a rollable TV, but for the first time, a rollable smartphone will hit the market.
At CES 2020, TCL introduced rollable smartphones and introduced a prototype. IFA announced that it does not plan to release such a smartphone before the end of 2020. Now a video has been leaked showing the company’s rollable smartphone and it looks like a promotion. So, the launch of the phone is probably approaching.
As you can see in the video above, published by Fold Universe and bounced on the net by Ross Young (founder of DSCC), two TCL solutions related to rollable and flexible displays are shown, but the first one captures the attention in particular.
The display extends vertically, when rolled up the panel has a 4.5 “diagonal, which becomes 6.7” when fully unrolled. The goal of this type of solution is to create a compact device, which if necessary provides a larger screen.
The TCL phone is not very thick and its construction looks very stable. In the same video, the company presents a rollable OLED screen of 17-inches that when folded looks like a cylinder. It may be some kind of external monitor for use on various devices.

According to the developers, the roll-up display is highly durable. It can withstand at least 200,000 fold/unfold cycles. It is possible that fully working prototypes of the device will be demonstrated at the end of this or early next year.
