Difference Between Cable Modems, Routers and Gateways

The Internet has become a part of our everyday lives. Whether it is simply browsing social networks like Facebook, chatting with colleagues and friends, or using content from websites, the Internet is something that has long become a part of us.

Every device that can connect has specific other devices that allow you to connect to the Internet. One of these devices is a modem. But the modem is not enough. What we also need when connecting is a signal from an Internet Service Provider (ISP). And then there is a router and gateways too. What is a modem, router, and gateway, what is the exact difference between these devices, and whether we indeed need all of them to be able to connect to the Internet – find out below the article.

    Modem – MODulate and DEModulate

A modem is a tool that modulates an analog signal (as sound) and decodes a digital signal from an analog. A modem is a device whose primary purpose is to connect you or your device to an Internet service provider. But, if there is no signal from the ISP, there will be nothing to join. You can choose several ways to connect to the Internet via a modem. You can make a connection via cable, or you can connect to the DSL Internet. One thing that is specific about modems is that one modem model will not work on every ISP. In short, the modem is something like a connection between the Internet and a local network.

A router can separate and connect two computer networks at the same time.

A router is a device that serves to connect directly to the Internet. Let’s say I am writing this article now from my dining room, using a laptop connected to a Wi-Fi internet network via a router located in a kitchen. It actually means that the router is used to connect directly to the Internet, wired or wirelessly.

You can also use a router to connect or combine multiple types of Internet connections or multiple subtypes of Internet networks (such as a LAN or WAN) to provide connection services either wirelessly or by wire. When you say that your smartphone is connected to a Wi-Fi network, it means that you are connected to the router via a wireless, Wi-Fi internet connection. If you have a broadband router, the good news is that you can also use such a router to connect mobile phones to the Internet. The router manages data packets using cables and various headers, and in this way, it can find the best possible path that is most suitable for routing these packets.

Both the modem and the router on the same device?

Although a modem and a router are used for different things, it does not mean that you cannot locate these two devices on the same device. Some widgets have both routers and modems inside. Of course, these are specific devices with a built-in “2 in 1” option and use appropriate programs.

However, when separated, the modem and router give users a lot more flexibility than when we have a device that combines these two devices.

What is an essential difference between a router and a modem?

A router is a device that you can connect multiple devices to it. A modem is such a device that you can connect only one device to it. You can also join the modem to a computer or a router, but you cannot do both simultaneously. Once the modem receives the information, it will forward it without filtering it.

The router also includes multiple security methods and measures, like firewalls. After collecting the data, the router will examine it and see what kind of data it is.

Gateway is (not) the same as a router.

Intranet is the concept of forming a private TCP/IP network connected to the Internet in a controlled way. The fundamental link between the Intranet and the Internet is the Gateway device. The gateway is often the same as the Firewall, a device that filters traffic between two networks for security reasons.

A gateway is a hardware or software package that connects two different network environments. For example, you can use a gateway to connect PC-based networks and a large computer. The term gateway can indicate any device or software packaging that joins two different environments, regardless of networks. In inter-networking, you can use the gateway to show devices that are connected to the networks. Often, those devices are routers.

The gateway, usually as a dedicated computer, must be able to support both connecting environments. To each of the connected network environments, the gateway looks like a node in that environment. As different networks connect, network gateways sometimes must perform data translation, compression or expansion, encryption or decryption, and more.

    Conclusion

A modem is a device whose primary purpose is to connect your device to an Internet service provider. On the other hand, a router helps you connect directly to the Internet. You can also use it to connect multiple Internet networks wirelessly or wired. A router is used for routing messages within the same autonomous system (network) using the same routing algorithms. A device that routes packets to a destination outside the independent system’s boundaries (network) is called a gateway. Each of these devices has its advantages but the most important thing to know is that we would not be able to connect to the Internet.
