Rise of mobile technologies, China Mobile, 5G messaging service

Brady CottonBy Brady CottonNovember 15, 2021

This article will give you the best practices and the keys to understanding your mobile solutions, business impacts, and particular development of mobile in China.

According to the latest annual survey by We Are Social, mobile is on the rise. Of the 7.87 billion people on Earth, there are 5.27 billion mobile users. Another interesting statistic: in 2021, the share of web traffic on mobile has increased to 56%. This is + 11% compared to 2020. That’s why now, it’s important to understand how digital transformation and innovation impact the decision-making and which keys give to designing and deploying an effective and efficient product on mobile.

Understand the psychology of users and their habits

As you will discover in this guide, first of all, it is imperative that you understand the expectations of your users. Users are more and more demanding and now expect the same functionalities from the applications. It’s known that people prefer to use apps to buy things and orders products from the supermarkets, to play on Betwinner APP, to communicate with each other through social media apps. There is a need to seek to understand the psychology of users and their consumption habits.

PWA, cross-platform or native app: which format for which need

Cross-platform development makes it possible to design two kinds of mobile applications: native generated applications and hybrids. Both will be visible on all operating systems of existing smartphones and tablets and yet they will only be developed once.

Regarding the native application generated, the language used will be C #, Ruby or Javascript. The accompanying development tools could be Xamarin, Titanium, Rubymotion, Qt mobile. For the hybrid application, the web content used (HTML, CSS, Javascript) will be wrapped in an application overlay adapted to the various operating systems required.

There are several development tools for this type of application: PhoneGap, Apache Cordova, Rhomobile.

The innovative formats and technologies are cross-platform with React Native and Flutter which allow you to develop native applications for both iOS and Android or the PWA (Progressive Web App) which links the web and mobile.

    Chinese business impacts on mobiles

Several Chinese telecom operators including China Mobile are encouraging the nationwide rollout of a new 5G messaging service.

In the coming months, the three major Chinese mobile network operators China Mobile, China Telecom and China Unicom plan to launch their new 5G messaging service. They announce to integrate video, audio, and electronic payment functions. The tool is expected to compete with the Tencent-designed WeChat app, which is very popular in China and has more than one billion accounts worldwide.

A new messaging service with multiple features

The new service from China Mobile, China Telecom and China Unicom is expected to undergo its first commercial test during the second part of October. It was Huang Chandjian, deputy general manager of the China Unicom product centre, who revealed the rollout of this brand new service during the PT Expo China event in Beijing from September 27-29. Basically, the introduction of these messaging features should have been done in April 2020.

The three companies told the South China Morning Post that “5G messaging will become a new entry point for various online services.” Their new tool will allow users to send text, photos, videos and audio directly through the message window on their smartphones, without downloading an app. It will also allow government agencies and businesses to provide services and communicate directly with mobile subscribers through chatbots.

A digital wallet will be integrated and will allow subscribers to make mobile payments directly from their phones. This feature is the result of a partnership with the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China.

The gradual development of 5G in China

The world’s largest wireless network operator registered 304.14 million 5G users out of its 951.1 million subscribers. At the same time, China Telecom has 146.62 million 5G subscribers and China Unicom 129.1 million.

Earlier this month, China Mobile granted the rights to build the 4G and 5G converged core network to Huawei and ZTE, in order to support them in the face of the US sanctions they are facing. China plans to build at least 600,000 additional 5G base stations this year, accelerating the deployment of the next-generation mobile network in major cities across the country. Almost 700,000 5G base stations were built across the country in October last year.

While it may overshadow WeChat a bit, experts don’t think this new messaging system will actually threaten Tencent’s super-app. Liu Xingliang, an independent internet and tech expert told the South China Morning Post last April that “the service will not pose a threat to WeChat anytime soon, because considerable time and effort is required to create an ecosystem on this scale.

    Conclusion

Thus, we see that mobile technologies are constantly developing. More and more people prefer a mobile phone to a computer, and such development giants as Chinese companies are coming up with more and more innovative solutions specifically for mobile devices.
