LONGER is a company founded in 2014 by scientists and researchers from the Thousand Talents Plan and MIT; with several registered and approved patents and different products dedicated to 3D printing; with printers and various associated accessories.
The structure of the 3D LONGER LK4 X is distinctive, with a triangle shape. This will provide greater stability at the time of printing and, consequently, a higher print quality. It has a touch screen for machine control and is also compatible with various operating systems and 3D modeling software. It uses the same common filament materials to create 3D objects and guarantees a layer thickness of 0.1 to 0.4 mm, with a print speed of up to 180mm/s. The nozzle temperature goes up to 250º and has a diameter of 0.4mm.
The printer offers an aluminum heating plate (100°C) covered by a glass plate which offers a very good gripping surface1. The nozzle and the overall operation of the printer are classic with a step-by-step assembly explained by rather clear paper documentation. It is also possible to find videos online showing the operation to be carried out step by step for the Longer LK4 X or the classic LK4.
The strengths of this model are numerous, starting with an electrical circuit entirely in 24 volts instead of 12 volts. The heating operations of the bed and the nozzle are much faster at 24 volts and the printer is easier to use thanks to this. The presence of a large color touch screen seems rather like a gadget at first, but it is well thought out and effective. It allows immediate handling and above all makes life easier for the user on a daily basis. To level the plate, for example, a menu allows you to quickly move the nozzle over 5 control points in order to carry out the calibration operation without problems.
The printing choice menus like the control of this one are also clearly readable, which is quite pleasant on a daily basis. The temperatures of the different elements are clearly displayed, and the printing times; and the different settings, all of this is very readable. The software part of the printer is Open Source Marlin and the motherboard can be controlled by an external USB solution such as an Octoprint assembly. The modifiable set, benefiting from many developments, is above all very efficient and pleasant.
We find the great classics in terms of printing: for example, we can resume a print interrupted by a power cut; the Longer LK4 X also makes it possible to detect an end of the filament and restart printing once it is full. Small details which, on a printer at this price, are frankly welcome. Longer LK4 X features a direct dual-gear extruder with a 5:1 reduction ratio, stronger and more accurate filament control, and is compatible with PLA, TPU, ABS, PETG, and WOOD.
With 16-point exact leveling, the unevenness of the hotbed is automatically compensated; deducting the hassle of manual leveling and improving printing. The platform is built of premium spring-flexible steel that allows for simple filament adhesion to the print bed without the use of adhesive. And simply removes the printed model by just removing the PEI sheet and slightly bending it.
But what is perhaps the most interesting about this model for individuals is the presence of quality electronics in the machine. There are TMC 2208 drivers which will allow a more precise and smoother movement of the nozzle, without the noisy jerks of basic electronics. This provides better print quality but also much quieter operation. If the ventilation remains strong, although it is possible to replace the fans supplied with higher-end and quieter models, the movement noises of the assembly disappear almost completely compared to a conventional printer.
It doesn’t seem like much, but these are the most noticeable noises in use. If you lock your printer in a closet or cabinet, in a garage or workshop; the noise of the fans will be very muffled by a partition or a door. On the other hand, the movements of your nozzle will remain audible on an entry-level model. With the Longer LK4 X, these will be perfectly inaudible. It’s a real luxury in an apartment, a great comfort in a house too, we don’t hesitate to launch a printing project of several hours with this type of model.
The basic design of the Longer LK4 X offers a MicroSD card reader and a USB Type-B port, just like on paper printers. The problem, this card reader is located at the back of the machine which often requires convolutions around a calibrated machine. It is also possible to mount more or less practical extensions. A “3D Touch” leveling sensor will facilitate the calibration of the plate, for example, even if it is clearly not essential. A change of the extruder is also possible, it is perhaps the least qualitative part of this kit. The model delivered is effective, but we will benefit from thinking about changing it over time to a more powerful and efficient model. This may vary depending on your use, but if you plan to print very often, using a higher-end extruder may be a good investment.2 over time.
