Cubot Rainbow 2 Review – Ultra Budget Dual Camera Smartphone

Reyan SiddiquiBy Reyan SiddiquiMarch 30, 2017
Facebook Twitter Pinterest LinkedIn Tumblr Email

Cubot Rainbow 2 is an upgraded version of the original Cubot Rainbow, which means that there are some improvements as regards the technical characteristics. For Cubot Rainbow 2, the Cubot has chosen the 64bit SoC of Mediatek, MT6735, which unlike the 6580, supports connection to 3G networks. Quad-core processor at 1.3 Ghz of SoC, accompanying 1GB RAM and 16GB built-in and expandable memory.

The internal memory is 16 GB, without this being a disadvantage as Cubot has integrated a microSD card slot that will allow you to expand your storage to 256GB. It is highly recommended to purchase a high-performance storage card so you are better performance when running your applications.

    Packaging

Cubot Rainbow 2 arrives in a cute cardboard box where you will find 1 smartphone that comes wearing a transparent silicone carrying case. But this protector would be useful only to people who are sure to fall frequently. The body is big enough and with this Case, it impressively. Inside the box there are instructions in several languages and European type charger with a USB cable. Interesting it got the tape, which was placed on the packaging of the adapter.

    Design and build quality

When looking at Cubot Rainbow 2 it is surprising that it only costs approximately $69.99. Its processing structure is coherent. There is no gap between components, no cracking sounds and no sign of cheap processing. The display has an aluminium-coloured plastic frame. The backside also consist of plastic with a patterned surface. You can choose between the colours GOLDEN, WHITE, BLUE, BLACK, and RED. With its
    5-inch display it is a medium-sized smartphone.

Its weight of 156g, its thickness of 7.9 mm, on the other hand, is on average. It measures 144 mm in length and 72mm in width. When it comes to design, the Rainbow 2 is kept quite subtle. On the upper rear side, you can find the camera with a LED flash light, speakers are situated on the lower rear side, volume control and power button are on the right side of the mobile. Also essential are the three common Android soft touch buttons which you will find underneath the phone’s display. It has a 3mm bezel. Battery and rear cover can be removed and exchanged. It houses two SIM slots as well as a micro SD card (up to 128GB). Unfortunately, there is no LED notification light.

    Display

Rainbow offers a 5-inch display operating with IPS and a resolution of 720 x 1280 pixels (pixel resolution of 294 pixels per inch). Single pixels are not visible. The manufacturer states brightness to be at 450cd/m² which is a really good value considered its low budget price. In fact, the display is very bright which makes handling outside easy. Only bright sunlight makes things a little difficult. Angle stability is always maintained and it also achieves good contrast regarding its price. You can read texts or watch videos without any problems.

Another advantage of Cubot’s Rainbow 2 mobile phone is its precise 5 point touch screen. Most devices in this price range have slow panels which often results in typing errors. Rainbow 2 however, houses a fast and precise touchscreen which is also suitable for frequent and fast texters.

    Performance

Cubot Rainbow 2 Antutu Benchmark Together with the device itself, you receive the typical current Mediatek low-budget smartphone equipment consisting of Mediatek MTK6580 with 4x 1.3GHz. The processor is perfectly suitable to use standard functions. Whatsapp, Facebook and internet surfing poses no problem at all. Low graphics-intensive games can be easily played with the Mali 400 GPU.

Internal storage comprises 16GB and can be extended with a micro SD card to up to 256GB. The memory module’s 100MB/s reading and 41MB/s writing speed is alright. The RAM also reaches good values with its 1GB/s pace.

Cubot Rainbow 2 is easy to handle. The phone’s speed is sufficient to comfortably use simple applications and play low graphics-intensive games. If short waiting periods are not much of a problem to you, this phone is a good choice.

    Camera Quality

So the most interesting feature is definitely dual camera setup, or in other words it has dual rear cameras. But they don’t have the same camera sensor because one camera has 13 megapixel while the second camera has 2.0 megapixel sensor. Cubot Rainbow 2 should offer better quality for taking pictures.

    Battery

Non Removable Battery capacity is at 2350mAh in Cubot Rainbow 2 which is barely still average for a 5-inch device. Yet Rainbow 2 achieves good battery life due to its efficient processor and Android 7 operation system. Thus stand-by battery consumption is improved. In practice, the phone can be easily used for three or four hours straight on a daily basis. Non-frequent users may even achieve a two day battery life. Regular charging duration amounts to approximately two hours.

    Conclusion

Cubot impresses with the production of a low-budget mobile phone with high quality. However, considered its price, this is quite common. Except for these two points, Rainbow 2 offers many advantages, such as Android 7 system, Dual camera, dual SIM with storage extension possibility and enough performance to use apps and standard settings. Particularly exceptional for a device in this price range is the HD display and the precise 5 point touch screen. This mobile is completely satisfying for newcomers.
