Redmi 17 5G Launches in India With Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 and Huge 7,900mAh Battery

    September 3, 2026

Xiaomi has officially expanded its affordable 5G lineup in India with the launch of the Redmi 17 5G. The new smartphone combines a Snapdragon 4-series processor with an unusually large battery, a high-refresh-rate display, and several features that are not commonly found in this price segment.

The Redmi 17 5G starts at INR 23,999, which is approximately $270 or RMB 1,706 based on the reported conversion. The phone will go on sale in India from September 10.

While the device is positioned as a relatively affordable 5G smartphone, its biggest selling point is clearly endurance. Xiaomi has equipped it with a 7,900mAh battery, making battery capacity one of the defining characteristics of the new model.

    Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 Powers the Redmi 17 5G

The Redmi 17 5G is the first smartphone launched in India with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 platform.

The chipset is manufactured using a 4nm process and combines Cortex-A78 and Cortex-A55 CPU cores, with a maximum clock speed of 2.4GHz. It also integrates an Adreno GPU for graphics processing.

For a budget-oriented 5G phone, the Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 is designed to balance everyday performance and power efficiency rather than compete directly with flagship processors.

The phone is paired with LPDDR4X RAM and UFS 2.2 storage, with 6GB and 8GB memory configurations available. Users can also expand storage with a microSD card of up to 2TB, giving the device considerably more flexibility for storing photos, videos, music and applications.

7,900mAh Battery Is the Main Attraction

The most eye-catching specification is the 7,900mAh battery.

That is significantly larger than the batteries found in many mainstream smartphones, and Redmi is clearly targeting users who prioritize long battery life over a particularly thin design.

The phone supports 45W fast charging, while Xiaomi claims that the battery can provide around 2.5 days of typical use.

The company’s quoted endurance figures are also impressive on paper. The Redmi 17 5G is rated for more than 20 hours of continuous video playback, up to 146 hours of music playback, and as much as 53 hours of continuous calling.

Actual battery life will naturally vary depending on network conditions, brightness, applications and usage patterns, but the large battery should make the phone particularly attractive to heavy users and travelers.

It Can Also Charge Other Devices

The large battery isn’t only intended to keep the Redmi 17 5G running.

The phone supports 22.5W wired reverse charging, allowing it to act as a temporary power source for compatible accessories and other devices.

For example, users could use the phone to provide emergency power to wireless earbuds, a smartwatch or even another smartphone when a charger or power bank is unavailable.

This feature makes the unusually large battery more useful in everyday situations rather than simply increasing the number on the specification sheet.

    6.9-Inch 120Hz Display

On the front, the Redmi 17 5G features a large 6.9-inch LCD display with a 120Hz refresh rate and 240Hz touch sampling rate.

The high refresh rate should make scrolling through webpages, social media feeds and menus feel smoother than on a conventional 60Hz panel. The higher touch sampling rate is also aimed at improving responsiveness when interacting with the screen.

The display has received three TÜV Rheinland certifications covering low blue light, flicker-free operation and circadian-friendly viewing. It also supports DC dimming, giving users additional options for managing screen brightness.

For a large-screen budget phone, these display features could be particularly useful for people who spend several hours each day watching videos, browsing the web or using social media.

50MP Dual Camera With a New RGB Light System

The rear camera system consists of a 50MP AI dual-camera setup. The main camera has an f/1.8 aperture and supports features including Night Mode, portrait photography and HDR.

On the front, the phone has an 8MP selfie camera and supports simultaneous recording from the front and rear cameras.

However, the more unusual imaging feature is located around the rear camera module.

The Redmi 17 5G includes a dynamic RGB lighting system integrated into the rear camera area. Users can choose from eight lighting colors, with the lights capable of displaying different effects for charging, notifications, gaming and camera-related status information.

This doesn’t directly improve image quality, but it gives the phone a more distinctive appearance and allows the rear camera area to function as a visual notification system.

    Practical Hardware for Everyday Use

Beyond the major specifications, Redmi has included several practical features that are becoming less common on modern budget smartphones.

The Redmi 17 5G has an IP64 rating for dust and water resistance, along with a side-mounted fingerprint scanner for biometric unlocking.

It also features dual speakers and a 300% volume mode, which is designed to provide louder audio when standard speaker output isn’t sufficient.

For wired audio fans, the phone retains a 3.5mm headphone jack, allowing users to connect traditional wired headphones without an adapter.

The software side is also relatively current. The Redmi 17 5G ships with Xiaomi HyperOS 3 based on Android 16, giving the phone a newer software foundation out of the box.

Is the Redmi 17 5G Worth Watching?

The Redmi 17 5G stands out because it isn’t trying to win the budget-phone market with just one specification.

Its 7,900mAh battery addresses battery anxiety, while the Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 provides a newer platform for everyday 5G use. The 6.9-inch 120Hz display makes the phone suitable for media consumption, and expandable storage up to 2TB is useful for users who keep large amounts of content on their devices.

The dynamic RGB lighting around the camera is perhaps the most unconventional addition. It won’t make photos better, but it gives the Redmi 17 5G a visual feature that separates it from many similarly priced smartphones.

At INR 23,999, the Redmi 17 5G is positioned as an endurance-focused 5G phone for users who care more about battery capacity, a large display and practical features than flagship-level camera hardware or performance.

With sales beginning in India on September 10, the phone will soon face the more important test: how its large battery, Snapdragon platform and overall experience perform in everyday use.
