This new report, published by Strategy Analytics, shows that Apple shipped 70.7 million devices in the 4th quarter of 2019, a bit more than Samsung estimated at 68.8 million devices. With this number, Apple is in the leading position, accounting for 19% of the smartphone market while Samsung is in the second position with 18%. Huawei, meanwhile, slipped to third place with 15%. The total number of smartphones shipped this year, totaling all vendors, amounted to 1.4 billion devices according to Strategy Analytics.
Research companies were forced to calculate smartphone sales because Apple stopped supplying iPhones in January 2019. On the other hand, Samsung gave the total number of devices including smartphones. The results were inconsistent, for example, IHS Markit ranked against the Samsung lead with 70.7 million, while Apple was second with 67.7 million.
According to calculations, Apple is on par with Samsung thanks to the soaring sales of new iPhones, grossing $56 billion, up 8% in December. iPhone 11 quickly became the best-selling iPhone every week during the 4th quarter. and three new iPhone models also became the most popular iPhone. Apple is expected to make a profit of $22.2 billion in sales of $91.8 billion. In the 4th quarter, it was also the quarter that Apple recorded record revenue since Q1 2018.
While the report said Samsung’s profits this week were down 38%, the company had a growth spurt in the mobile market but it was not enough to overcome and reduce sales. Samsung’s mobile business grew 67% to $2.13 billion, while its revenue increased 7% to $21.1 billion. But the drop in demand for LCD monitors and prices has also shown Samsung’s profits drop by 57% while sales are down 11%.
