Apple is reportedly continuing development of the second-generation iPhone Air, with the upcoming model expected to address several shortcomings of its ultra-thin predecessor through significant upgrades in photography, performance, battery life, and thermal management.
According to a report cited by 9to5Mac, Apple is actively working on the iPhone Air 2, which is expected to launch in spring 2027. While the company has yet to confirm the device, the new model is said to retain the signature slim design of the original iPhone Air while introducing meaningful hardware improvements aimed at enhancing the overall user experience.
Development Continues Despite Earlier Sales Rumors
Earlier industry reports suggested that weaker-than-expected sales of the first-generation iPhone Air had prompted Apple to delay the second-generation model, raising speculation that the project might be canceled.
However, more recent reports indicate that Apple has not abandoned the iPhone Air lineup. Instead, development is reportedly continuing, with the company focusing on refining the concept by addressing feedback from the first-generation device.
Dual-Camera System Expected
One of the most significant rumored upgrades is the addition of a dual rear camera system.
The original iPhone Air featured only a single rear camera, a compromise made to preserve its ultra-thin profile. According to current reports, the iPhone Air 2 will add a second camera, likely an ultra-wide lens rather than a telephoto sensor.
If accurate, this would bring the camera configuration closer to Apple’s standard iPhone models, giving users greater flexibility for landscape photography, group shots, and creative perspectives without sacrificing the device’s slim design.
A20 Pro Chip Could Debut Apple’s 2nm Era
Performance is also expected to receive a major boost.
The iPhone Air 2 is rumored to feature Apple’s A20 Pro processor, succeeding the A19 Pro used in the first-generation model. Supply chain reports suggest the A20 Pro could become Apple’s first iPhone chipset manufactured using a 2nm process, delivering improvements in both performance and power efficiency.
The chip is also rumored to introduce wafer-level multi-chip module (WMCM) packaging, an advanced manufacturing technology that integrates the system-on-chip (SoC) and DRAM directly at the wafer level. This approach is expected to improve bandwidth, reduce latency, and enhance overall energy efficiency.
Larger Battery to Improve Endurance
Battery life has reportedly been another major focus during development.
According to supply chain sources, the iPhone Air 2 may feature a 3,500mAh battery, representing an increase of more than 10% over the original model’s 3,149mAh capacity.
Combined with the efficiency gains expected from the A20 Pro chip, the larger battery could deliver noticeably longer real-world usage times, addressing one of the primary criticisms of the first-generation device.
VC Cooling Technology May Enhance Sustained Performance
Apple is also expected to improve thermal management by introducing vapor chamber (VC) cooling technology to the iPhone Air lineup.
The technology, previously rumored for the iPhone 17 Pro series, helps distribute heat more effectively across the device, reducing thermal throttling during demanding tasks such as gaming, video recording, and AI-powered workloads.
Adding VC cooling would represent a significant step forward for Apple’s ultra-thin smartphones, where limited internal space makes heat dissipation particularly challenging.
Maintaining the Ultra-Thin Vision
Despite the hardware upgrades, Apple is expected to preserve the defining characteristic of the iPhone Air series—its exceptionally slim and lightweight design.
By combining a dual-camera system, a larger battery, a next-generation 2nm processor, and improved thermal management, the iPhone Air 2 aims to deliver a more balanced flagship experience while maintaining the sleek form factor that distinguishes the lineup.
