Artificial Intelligence vs. Robotics: What’s the Difference?

Robots are a fascination for many people. Their ability to progressively complete complex tasks meant to be executed by people is a reason enough to keep our eyes peeled on this technology. The topic of AI vs. robotics is arguably the most debated in the tech world today. There is no doubt that a robot can easily work in an assembly; however, there is no consensus about its intelligence ability. Like ‘robots,’ AI is hard to define, although it ultimately describes the processes by which human thought processes are recreated in a man-made machine with human intellectual abilities.

This project’s success would mean that robots gain the ability to reason, use language, formulate new ideas, and learn just about anything. Even though roboticists are nowhere near achieving this goal, the surge in machine learning institutions and robotics points to a bright future. There is no denying that modern technology has recorded incredible milestones and it is currently reflecting in different areas complementing modern lifestyles. Take for instance augmented reality and virtual reality commonly used in digital gaming. It is such developments indicating that the next decade is one to watch. While trying to present facts on artificial intelligence vs. robotics, this article also explores the similarities and differences between the two concepts.

    What is Artificial Intelligence?

Artificial intelligence is a branch of computer science that focuses on the simulation of machines to learn and solve problems just like humans. Using innovative strategies like machine learning and reinforcement learning, machines can be programmed to think and mimic human actions. This goal is achieved when algorithms are modified and trained to execute actions based on the environment’s inputs and outputs rather than waiting for human intervention.

You will be excited to know that artificial intelligence can be deployed in almost every industry in the modern world, from the healthcare and financial sectors to manufacturing and consumer goods, and so much more. For example, Facebook and Amazon’s recommendation engines use AI for target marketing. Other applications include GPS route finders and Google search engines.

From the precedent, it is clear that AI programs are not specifically used to control robots. When utilized, they are just a part of a larger robotic system that works in conjunction with actuators, sensors, and non-AI programming. That said, “intelligence” is the only key aspect that differentiates AI from robotics. AI programs mimic human intelligence, while non-AI programs only execute defined sets of instructions.

    What is Robotics?

Today, robots perform all kinds of tasks ranging from patrolling borders, helping children afflicted with autism, and cleaning big stores. But what are they? And will they succeed in improving our lives?

Robotics is a science branch that studies robots, which are programmable machines that complete tasks faster and efficiently than humans. These are either autonomous or semi-autonomous. Robots are capable of movements and perform their tasks with sensors to help them interact with the physical world. Even though robotics is mentioned under the artificial intelligence banner, not all robots are smart.

Whereas some robots are programmed to completed repeated tasks without any built-in intelligence, others are trained to complete complex tasks that require some intelligence and adaptation. These may be found in industries like education and medicine, where they work alongside humans in classrooms and operating rooms. Reports indicate that global investment in robotics is expected to go beyond $180 billion by 2020, which proves that, despite not matching the robots in Hollywood Sci-Fi movies, machines play a significant role in business innovation and development.

The amalgamation of AI and Robotics

Robots have existed without AI in the past and continue to do so today. Although many people have a common perception that these two principles are somewhat similar, they are not. In a layman’s language, a robot is a body, while AI is the brain. The absence of robots would render AI as nothing more than just software interaction. Although the combination of the two principles is still under research, artificially intelligent robots indicate a bright future towards the two technologies’ amalgamation. To achieve even more untouched goals, development teams will require motivation and dedication, especially now that robotics has increased AI consultation services worldwide.

The combination of artificial intelligence and robotics will benefit humankind in a way that has never been seen before. Just like curiosity took us to mars and the moon, robotics is an ever-developing branch of science that seeks to satisfy curiosity. When this curiosity fades, so will our will to live. So far, robotics has made our lives better. There is no doubt that curiosity has specially rewarded humankind, as evidenced by drones, micro-drones, pay loading shelves, UAV, among other innovations.
